Combining Ability and Heterosis in Brassica Campestris

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A complete diallel cross involving four genotypes of B. cempestris L. were studied in Fl for nine characters including seed yield/plant. Both additive and non-additive gene action was found in the Inheritance of all the characters except days to flowering, plant height and primary branches/plant. Preponderance of additive gene action for days to maturity, secondary branches/plant, slliquaej plant and seeds/siliqua, and non-additive gene action for days to flowering, plant height, primary branches/plant. siliqua length and seed yield/plant were found. Among the parents M-27 was the best general combiner for slliqua and seed yield/plant. The hybrid YS- 52 x M-27 exhibited highest significant SCA effect for seed yield/plant. Heterosis over mid- as well as better-parent was observed in all the characters in different crosses. For seed Yield/plant, heterosis over mid-parent ranged from-30.33 to + 117.21%.

Objectives:

To estimate the general and specific combining abilities from a 4 x 4 diallel set of crosses as well as to study the magnitude of heterosis for seed yield and its component characters.

Methodology:

The experimental materials consisted of four- B. cempestris genotypes viz. YS-52,SS-75,M-26 and M-27. The genotypes YS-52 and SS-75 produce 4-chambered fruits and yellow seeds; while the other two genotypes introduced from Sweden produce 2-chambered fruits but brown seeds. These were crossed in all possible cornblnations including reciprocals. The resulting 12 hybrids along with their parents were raised in the Experimental Farm of the Department of Genetics & Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh in 1980-81 growing season. The design of the experiment was a randomized block with three replications. Appropriate cultural operations were given to raise the crop. Data on different characters were recorded from 30 randomly selected plants of the hybrids and parents. The combining ability analysis was done following method I and Model I of Griffing (1956). The magnitude of heterosis was estimated and tested for significance using standard formulae.

Achievement/Findings:

All the Fl 'S which produced more than 40% positive heterosis over better-parent for seed yield/plant also produced significant positive heterosis over both mid- and better-parent for secondary branches except YS-52 x M-27, and for plant height except M-27 x SS-75. The hybrid M-27 x SS-75 found to be the earliest maturing genotype.
