Effects of Artificial Feeds on the Growth of Labeo Rohita (ham.), Cirrhina Mrigala ( Ham.) and Hypopthalmichthys Molitrix (vel. ) Incomposite Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The results of the study on the effects of different artificial feeds to the growth of Labeo rohita (Ham.), Cirrhina mrigala (Harn.) and Hypopthalmichthys molitrix (Vel.) in five fertilized mini-ponds are presented. All the species showed high growth rate with artificial feeding. Protein rich artificial feeds containing wheat bran, fish meal and mustard oil cake gave maximum growth rate. Wheat bran was better than the rice bran. Among all the species, C. mriqal showed highest response to artificial feeding. Protein rich feed ingredients were recorded as good for the formulation of suitable artificial feed for all the tested fishes.

Objectives:

For cage and pan culture, as well as for the culture of fishes in ponds, rivers haors, beeIs etc. there is no definite fish feed in Bangladesh. Development of quality fish feed through series of experiments will greatly help intensive fish culture and management practices.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for a period of three and a half months from 31^st August 1983 to 14^th December 1983 in five newly constructed mini ponds of Fisheries Faculty. The area of each pond was 25^m2with water depth varying from 1.00 to 1.53 meter during the experimental period. For the convenient of the study the ponds were numbered as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The aquatic weeds and undesirable fishes were removed by netting. Each of the ponds was fertilized with cowdunq, Urea and TSP at the rate of 2000 kg, 150 kg and 120 kg/ha respectively. The ponds were stocked with fingerlings of C. mrigala, L. rohita and H. motitrix at the rate of 10.000/ha in the ratio of 1 : 1 : 1 respectively. The initial length and weight of all the fishes were recorded at the time of releasing them in the ponds. The fishes were fed with four artificial feeds; viz, feed-l (rice bran and mustard ail cake), feed-II (wheat bran and mustard oil cake), feed-III (rice bran, mustard oil cake and fish meal) and feed- IV (wheat bran, mustard oil cake and fish meal). The feeds I, II, III and IV were give in ponds 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. The pond 5 was kept as control. The fishes were fed at the rate of 5% of the body weight daily from 8 to 9 A. M. The feed was supplied to the fish in the form of a small ball near the side of each pond on a stray about half of the depth of the pond and kept in position by hanging the tray fray from a bamboo pole tide with rope. Sampling was done fortnightly to adjust feeding rate by measuring the weight of half of the experimental fishes of each species from each pond during the period of study. Before taking weight, the excess water of the body of fishes was soaked by a dry cloth. The length and weight of the fishes were measured in centimeter (cm) and gram (g) respectively. The physicochemical factors such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen and free carbon dioxide were recorded fortnightly.

Achievement/Findings:

All these findings clearly indicated that the protein rich feed ingredients are good for the formulation of Artificial feeds. Again among all the species C. mrigala showed highest growth rate in all the ponds due to its bottom feeding habit. In the present study the H. moltrix also showed good response to the artificial feeding which might be due to supply of the feeds in the form of small balls in tray fixed in pond in about half of its depth. This method of feeding might have facilitated taking of food by all the species.
