Variability of Jamun (syzygium Cumini) in the Hilly Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The variability was studied on five years old jamun germplasm established at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14. The variability on the plant growth, phenology, qualitative and quantitative parameters of fruits of seven jamun germplasm were conducted. The plant height varied from 310 to 470 cm. The plant base girth ranged from 35 to 66 cm. The canopy spreading ranged from 260 × 230 cm to 510 × 500 cm. Days to 1^st flower bud emergence were 2 months before of 1^st flowering in all the treatments. The days to first flowering time varied from last January to Mid April. The days to first harvest varied from mid May to last June. The individual fruit weight ranged from 4.40 to 9.23 g. The seed size also varied 1.58 × 1.01 cm to 1.77 × 1.19 cm was recorded. The weight of seed ranging from 1.24 to 1.82 g. The fruit yield per plant varied from 10.74 to 27.80 kg. The fruit flesh thickness varied from 4.28 to 7.47 mm. The highest edible portion varied from 71.82% to 85.92%. The TSS content of fruits found 12.70% to 14.80% among the germplasm.

Objectives:

To study the variability of jamun germplasm in Chittagong Hill Tracts
To evaluated the variation of different growth and phenological characters of jamun for future improvement.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District on seven jamun germplasm during 2013-14 for the evaluation of jamun in hilly area. Seven grafted jamun germplasm viz., SC Rai-001, SC-Rai-002, SC-Rai-003, SC Rai-004, SC Rai-005, SC Rai-006 and SC Rai-007 were transplanted in 2009. The experiment was laid out in a single row plantation with three replications maintaining 8 × 8 m plant spacing. The soil was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 25 kg/plant, 230 g N, 185 g P₂O₅ and 240 g K₂O per plant per year. N P & K were applied in the form of urea, TSP and MoP, respectively in two equal installments in a year, the first during September-October and the second during April-May. Intercultural operations like irrigation, weeding etc. were done as per requirement. Plant growth, phenology, qualitative and quantitative parameters of fruits were recorded for study the variabilities.

Achievement/Findings:

A wide variation regarding plant growth, phenology, qualitative and quantitative parameters were recorded among the studied jamun germplasm. These variation indicating a scope of improvement through plant breeding.
