A study on the polyculture of Chinese carp with Indian major carp was carried out for one year in four demonstration ponds under four thanas of Feni district. The composite culture consisted of silver carp (Hypophthalmicthys molitrix) along with Indian major carp (Catla catla, Labeo rohita, and Cirrhira mrigala) in two ponds in combination I and only Indian major carps in another two ponds of combination II. Fingerlings were stocked at a density of 7410 fish per hectare in both combinations. Prior to stocking the ponds were fertilized with cowdung (4940 kq/ha), triple super phosphate (TSP, 123.5 kg/ha) and muriate of potash (MP, 33 kg/halo The ponds were fertilized at one months interval with urea and TSP in equal proportion at the rate of 82.3 kg/ha. Fishes were fed with a mixture of mustard oilcake and rice bran in equal proportion at the rate of 2% of their body weight. The results of the study showed that in combination I, silver carp attained the highest growth followed by catla, rohu and mrigal and in combination II, catla exhibited the highest growth followed by rohu and mriqal. Among all the four species in both combinations, silver carp attained the highest growth and mrigal attained the lowest growth. The total net production was 3062 kg/ha and 2836 kg/ha in combination I and II respectively. The economic analysis of the present study shows that the polyculture of silver carp and Indian major carp is more (13.78%) profitable than poly culture of only Indian major carps.

To find out a suitable stocking ratio and to see whether there is any effect of silver carp on the growth of indigenous carps in a composite culture system.

This study was conducted for a period of one year from May, 1989 to April, 1990 in four demonstration ponds in four thanas under Feni district. These thana are Feni sadar (pond no. 1), Chhagalnaia (pond no. 2), Parsuram (pond no. 3) and Dhaqhanbhuivan (pond no. 4). All the ponds were rain-fed, weed free, completely independent (without inlet or outlets) and exposed to the sun light. The physico-chemical characteristics of soil of each pond such as soil type, pH, 'phosphorous, organic carbon, available nitrogen were analysed weekly using a soil test kit. Before stocking, the-ponds were cleared off any aquatic weed present. The predatory and weed fishes were removed by repeated netting. The ponds were treated with lime at the rate of 247 kg/ha. No cowdung was applied after stocking of fingerlings. Two weeks after liming the ponds were fertilized with tripple super phosphate (TSP) at the rate of 123.5 kg/ha and muriate of potash (MT) at the rate of 33 kg/ha. Throughout the study period the ponds were regularly fertilized at one months interval with Urea and TSP in equal proportion at the rate of 82.3 kg/ha. The fertilizers were applied uniformly all over the ponds. Fingerlings of silver carps (Hypophthalmicthys molitrix), catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita) and mrigal (Chirrhina mrigala) were collected from Government Fish Seed Multiplication Farm, Feni. The fishes were stocked with same density of 7410 fish per ha in both combinations each with two replications. The combination and ratio used are shown in Table 2. Before stocking, the mean initial individual weight was recorded and fishes were randomly distributed among the experimental ponds. For statistical analysis, treatment means were analysed by student's t-test using a statistical package 'Microstat' in a microcomputer (ALR Power Flex Plus). At the end of the study, a simple economic analysis was carried out to see the net profit generated from this type of operation. The cost of different inputs were collected on the basis of Feni retail market price (1990).

The economic analysis of the cost of production of the present study shows that the polyculture of silver carp with Indian major carp is more profitable (13.76%) than polyculture of only Indian major carps although the input costs were same in both cases.
