Effect of Plant Population Density on Transplant Aus Rice Under Tidally Flooded Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Farming Systems Research site at Lebukhali under Patuakhali district during April-July 1990 to findout the suitable spacing and number of seedlings per hill of a local transplant aus rice cultivar, Haloi, under tidally flooded conditions. Grain and straw yields increased with closer spacing in both row and hill direction. The number of seedlings per hill did not show any significant difference. Grain sterility increased with more number of seedlings per hill. Grain yield was significantly influenced by the interaction between spacing and number of seedlings per hill. The closer spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm with six seedlings per hill produced 61 % and 44% higher grain and straw yields, respectively, over 40cm x 30cm spacing with 10 seedlings per hill.

Objectives:

The study was undertaken with different spacing and varied number of seedlings per hill.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Farming Systems Research (FSR) site at Lebukhali under Patuakhali district. The land was medium high with silty clay loam soil having pH 7.6. Haloi, an extensively cultivated local Aus rice variety of the area was used as the test crop and was planted at 20 x 15, 30 x 15, 30 x 20 and 40 x 30 cm spacing with 4. 6, 8 and 10 seedlings per hill. The experiment was laidout in a split-plot design with three replications with number of seedlings per hill in the main plot and spacings in the subplots. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted on 26 April and harvested on 20 July 1990. Fertilizers were applied at 60-40-20 kg N,P₂0₅, K₂0/ha, respectively. All fertilizers were applied as basal because splitting was not possible due to high level of standing water. Data on plant height. number of tillers per hill, number of panicles/m², filled and unfilled grains per panicle and 1000 grain weight were recorded at harvest from 10 randomly selected hills in each plot. Grain and straw yields were recorded from the entire unit plots. Data were statistically analysed. Duncan's New Multiple Range Test was used to compare the differences among treatment means.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that closer spacing under each treatment of number of seedlings/hill gave higher grain yield when compared with wider spacing. It was also observed that 4, 6, 8 and 10 seedlings per hill at a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm gave more or less similar grain yield. The highest grain yield was obtained when the crop was planted at a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm with 6 seedlings per hill. However, similar grain yields were also obtained when the crop was transplanted at the same spacing with 4 and 8 seedlings per hill. The spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm with 6 seedlings per hill can be chosen as the most promising practice if the per cent of yield increase and seedling economy is considered.
