Preliminary results on  possibility of polyculture of small indigenous fish species and initiation of social fishery concept in Bangladesh have been discussed.  It has been  found that  small fishes may create considerable outcome if they are cultured properly. The unutilized  ponds and roadside ditches may  be brought under productive utilization as well as a large group of  people in the rural areas could be engaged in this type of culture practice. In the  present study, three species of small fishes, viz., Colisa fasciatus (Bloch & Schneider), Puntius stigma ( Hamilton-Buchanan) and Rohtee  cotio (Hamilton-Buchanan) were cultured and the production of these fishes varied between 0.38  and 0.45 mtons, 0.47 and 0.63 mtons and 0.53 and 0.69 mtonslha/year, respectively in a single culture period, probably depending on the  stocking ratio. Both male and  female poor folks could be engaged in the social fishery; however, females could get  importance since they get easy entrance in almost all  the rural households

To  save the small indigenous fish  from   the verge of extinction and   also to  show  a source of income generation for  the  rural people.

Three species of  indigenous small fishes, Viz., Dhela (Rohtee   cotio),  Punti (Puntius  stigma) and   Khalisha (Colisa fasciatus)were selected  for the present investigation. Efforts were made to establish the  culture practice and  management procedure for  these small fishes. Sites at several locations were considered in order to select the project site, in and   around the Faridpur district. Two principal stations were selected,  each  of which controls separate  field stations. The  first station was   at Faridpur district which  controls two  field  stations, one  at Boalmari under Madhukhali Thana, while the second station  was  at Rajbari district that controls two  field  stations,  one  at Rajbari Sadar Thana and  the  other at Baliakhandi Thana. Following waterbodies were considered for the present study: (i) roadside ditches, (ii) derelict ponds of private owners and  (iii)  ponds not  used  for fish  culture or other purposes. These waterbodies were selected for easy communication and easy access during present study. The clay soil of the ponds and ditches were re excavated to  0.8  to  1.0  m in  depth covering an  area of 500  m2  on  an  average. This ensures a uniform depth of water area. At each site, at least one waterbody was provided  with an adjacent breeding area.  The breeding area was somewhat elevated. On the breeding ground, vegetation was allowed to grow naturally. Although, the procedure advocated by UNICEF was followed, prior to the application of organic manure and inorganic fertilizers, soil characteristics of waterbodies were examined. Usually all the ponds and ditches in the same locality were supplied with the same dosage of fertilizers and manure. The stacking of fish  species took  place  at the  end  of May,  1995, within 8 to 10 days after  filling  the  waterbodies. Fish species  for the  present study were  collected from  fish  farmer's pond,  seed collection pits  and  fish  fry  production center as  and  when possible. The stocking rate and density were  calculated considering the  expected growth and  production of Khalisha,  Punti and  Dhela. Initial weight and  density of stocked fry  of these fishes were 2.0- 2.0 g, 1.5- 2.4   g and  i.O- 3.0 g/m2,  respectively. The  selected fish  species   were  cultured for  a  period of  eight months, starting  from   April   to November 1995.

The results of the  present experiment revealed that the  unused waterbodies can be made  to produce a large amount of small fish.  It has been  found that, the production of Khalisha ranged between 345 and  413 kg, while  the  production of Punti and Dhela  were  429- 576 kg and  480- 624 kg/hal crop/yr, respectively. The  present rate of  production, however, is  lower  in  comparison with the production level   reported by  Jhingran and  Lin but  it is  assumed that the current rate of production could  be raised to a much  higher level  following modern aquaculture technology. The  present work  is exploratory in nature and  the  authors consider that this  was  the   beginning of a new  vista  on this line,  as  there are  many things to  do to  enhance production per unit area.  Moreover, in  case  of small fish culture  activities  poorfolks of  the rural  area may be  involved  in  a befitting manner, and  thus the  social fishery may be developed like  that of social  forestry. This  will  benefit the  society in  two  ways,  the  rural poorflok  specially the  females will get  a source of earning and on other hand, the  rural as well  as urban poorfolks will  get   adequate animal protein at  low  cost and unused  waterbodies will be profitability utilized. Culture and  management of small indigenous fish  species as  a  sustainable social  fishery practice has a  great possibility for expansion in  future.  Each and every waterbody or a cluster of waterbodies having deeper areas which  retain water in  dry  season but  do not  submerge in  rainy season may  serve  as  seed banks, since the  adult brood stock  could be kept  as a source  of seeds  for future use in them . In this way availability of fish  seeds in  large number could easily be ensured.
