Nursery management with polythene covered seedbeds at night and day were examined during boro season (winter season) in severe cold for 2001-2003 to observe whether these practices improved growth of rice seedlings with any carryover effect after transplanting. In 2001, results showed that seedling covered at day-night and day grew taller seedling than those of night covered and uncovered. But percent seedling mortality after transplanting was significantly higher in day-night and day cover treatment due to low dry matter content of the seedling than those of other treatments. The percent seedling mortality was the lowest in night cover treatment. In these regards, for increasing both seedling height and dry matter content, modified the day cover treatment in the year 2002. Split the day cover treatment into four namely, 2 hrs, 4 hrs, 6 hrs and 8 hrs uncover; it means seedbed was covered by transparent polythene sheet at 2, 4, 6 and 8 hrs after the sunrise, respectively. The seedlings grown through 4 and 6 hrs uncover treatment performed better than those of other treatments in respect of seedling height, dry matter content of the seedling, seedling mortality and grain yield. The effect of polythene cover was also reflected in growth duration of rice. Growth duration of rice decreased about 10 days for BRRI dhan28 and 15 days for BRRI dhan29 when transplanted the seedlings grown inside the polythene cover. Similar results were obtained in 2003. From these observations it was concluded that 4 hrs and 6 hrs uncover treatments could protect the seedlings from severe cold and could produce quality seedling during winter season.

To develop a more precise technology to protect seedlings from severe cold.

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute experimental farm during boro season (winter crop) in the year 2001, 2002 and 2003. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Sprouted seeds of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were seeded in the puddled seedbed. The seeding time was followed based on the climatic data; normally seeds were sown at the end of December or first week of January when temperature were very low in Gazipur district. The following treatments were studied in the seedbed in 2001; T1 = Seedbed fertilized with NPS (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Sulphur) + polythene cover at day night; T 2 = Seedbed fertilized with NPS + polythene cover at day; T 3 = Seedbed fertilized with NPS + polythene cover at night; T 4 = Seedbed fertilized with NPS and T 5 = Control (No fertilizer and without polythene cover). In 2002, the treatments were rearranged according to the results of 2001 and the following treatments were studied in the seedbed: Night polythene cover; 2 hours uncover; 4 hours uncover ; 6 hours uncover ; 8 hours uncover and Control. 2 hrs uncover, 4 hrs uncover, 6 hrs uncover and 8 hrs uncover treatments means the seedbed was covered by transparent polyethylene sheet at 2, 4, 6 and 8 hrs after the sunrise. The temperature data in different treatments were recorded in experimental period. At 31 DAS seedling were transplanted in the field to evaluate the performance of the seedling. In field conditions, seedling mortality, tillering pattern, growth duration and grain yield were observed. Numbers of established seedling were counted from the demarcated area (6 m2) within each plot at tillering stage for calculating percent seedling mortality. Four hills were selected after transplanting and counted tiller from 7 DAT (days after transplanting) up to maturity at 7 days intervals. Growth duration was designated by the duration between sowing and maturity. Yield data was observed from 6 m2 demarcated area where the number of established seedlings was counted and data converted into t/ha. Data were statistically analyzed by Analysis of Variance and the means were separated using DMRT.
