Collection and Evaluation of Banana Germplasm (bangla Kola) in Hilly Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four 6 of banana (Bangla kola) were collected and evaluated in against BARI Kola 3 at Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during the period from September, 2011 May, 2013 consisting second cropping season. The tallest plant was recorded (488cm) in MS Kha-014 which was very close to MS Kha-009 and MS Kha-016 (480cm) and the shortest plant (360cm) in MS Kha-010. The highest base girth was recorded (97 cm) in MS Kha-013 followed by MS Kha-009 and MS Kha-012 (95 cm). Maximum number of leaves/plant (13) were recorded in BARI kola 3, MS Kha-012 and MS Kha-014 and minimum (8) in MS Kha-010. The highest bunch weight (27.00 kg), number of hands/bunch (11), number of fingers/hand (14.95) and yield (67.50t/ha) were harvested from MS Kha-014 and the lowest bunch weight (13.50 kg), number of hands/bunch (8), hands weight (1.23 kg), single finger weight (110.15g) and yield (33.75 t/ha) were in MS Kha-012. The highest edible portion (77.08%) was recorded in MS Kha-010, while the lowest (68.08%) in MS Kha-016. Maximum TSS content (23%) was observed in MS Kha-013 and MS Kha-014 and minimum TSS (15%) was observed in MS Kha-016.

Objectives:

To study the adaptability and performance of selected banana (Bangla Kola) germplasm at Khagrachari,

To study the growth, yield and fruit characteristics of selected banana (Bangla Kola) germplasm at Khagrachari, and

To develop more banana variety having good growth, higher yield and fruit characteristics.

Methodology:

Sword suckers of 6 banana germplasm (Bangla Kola) were collected from farmers’ field and planted directly in the field of Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during September, 2011. Four selected lines of Sagor kola viz. MS Kha-009, MS Kha-010, MS Kha-012, MS Kha-013, MS Kha-014 and MS Kha-016 were included in the experiment. The BARI released banana variety BARI Kola 3 was used as check. The experiment was laid out in raised beds under randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 x 4 m. Four sword suckers were accommodated in each plot maintaining 2 x 2 m row to row as well as plant to plant distance. Suckers were planted in the field on 9 September 2011. The land was fertilized with cowdung @ 20t/ha and urea, TSP, MP and gypsum @ 600, 400 and 300 kg. Half of the cowdung, TSP and gypsum were applied in the field during final land preparation and the remaining halves were applied in the pit 10 days before planting. Urea and MP were applied as side dressing in five equal installments at one month interval starting from one month after planting. Bamboo sticks were supplied for support, weeding, irrigation and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on growth, yield and fruit characteristics from each unit plot and analyzed statistically following MSTATC programme.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering finger weight, number of fingers per bunch, bunch weight, yield and quality the line of MS Kha-014 and MS Kha-016. These two lines might be released as (Bangla Kola) varieties for hilly region.
