Varietal Adaptability of Banana in NARSingdi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Study the varietal adaptability of eight varieties of banana were evaluated at RHRS, Shibpur, Narsingdi during the period from March, 2011 to 2013. Maximum plant height was recorded in BARI Kola-3 which was statistically similar to that of BARI Kola-4. Number of leaves/plant varied from 4 to 9. Bunch weight was maximum in BARI Kola-3 which was statistically similar with BARI Kola-4 and BARI Kola-1. Maximum number of hands/bunch was obtained from BARI Kola-3 closely followed by BARI Kola-4 and Gara Sundor. Minimum hands/bunch was counted in Amrit Sagor. Fingers/hand was recorded maximum in BARI Kola-3 which was statistically similar with BARI Kola-4, Sabri Kola and Champa Kola. Weight of fingers/hand was maximum in BARI Kola-1 at par with Nepali Kola, Amrit Sagor and BARI Kola-3. Heavier banana finger (265 gm) was found in Amrit Sagor and lighter (93 g) in Gara sundor. Edible portion was maximum (183.3 g) in Amrit Sagor and minimum (66.67 g) in BARI Kola-3. Maximum TSS was found in BARI Kola-3 whereas minimum in Sabri Kola. Highest yield (42.33 t/ha) was recorded in BARI Kola-1 whish was statistically similar to BARI Kola-3 (41.90 t/ha). Lowest yield (21.50 t/ha) was recorded in Sabri Kola.

Objectives:

To study the adaptability and performance of selected banana germplasm at Narsingdi.

To study the growth, yield and fruit characteristics of selected banana germplasm at Narsingdi

To select suitable banana variety having good growth, higher yield and fruit characteristics for Narsingdi.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Shibpur, Narsingdi during the period from March 2011 to September 2013. Eight varieties of banana viz. Sabri kola, Amrit sagor, Champa kola, Gara sundor, BARI Kola-1, BARI Kola-3, BARI Kola-4 and Nepali kola were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 x 4 m. Four sword suckers were planting in raised beds maintaining 2 x 2 m row to row as well as plant to plant distance. Fertilizers were applied @ Cowdung 10kg, TSP 150gm, Gypsum 100gm, MOP 100gm, Boron 10g, ZnSO₄10 gm and MgSO₄ 10g per pit before planting the suckers. Urea and MOP were applied @ 875 and 850 gm per plant in 5 equal installments starting from 2 months after retaining 1^st ratoon crop at 45 days interval. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to May at one month interval. Bamboo sticks were supplied for each of the plant. Data were collected on no. of leaves/plant, bunch weight, plant height, no. of hands/bunch, average weight of fingers/hand , no. of fingers/hand, average length of fingers, average diameter of fingers, length of peduncle, wt. of peduncle, average wt. of ripe banana, wt. of edible portion, average peel wt, TSS, yield. Collected data were analyzed and means were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the yield attributes of the banana varieties, BARI Kola-1 and BARI Kola-3 performed better in Narsingdi region. In this point of view BARI Kola-1 and BARI Kola-3 may be recommended for cultivation in Narsingdi region. Further investigation may be conducted for confirmation of the result.
