Apparent protein digestibility (APD), apparent lipid digestibility (ALD) and true protein digestibility (TPD) coefficients of some plant and animal proteins were determined for fingerlings of rohu (L. rohita). The plant protein Ingredients were incorporated as sole source of protein into test diets containing 30% protein and animal protein ingredients into 35% protein diets. A protein-free diet was used to study the true protein digestion coefficients. Of the plant proteins tested, soybean meal produced significantly (P<0.05) the highest APD (84.06%) and TPD (88.63%) and sesame diet the lowest APD (76.16%) and TPD (80.55%) values. Linseed diet had significantly (P<0.05) higher APD (82.55%) and TPD (86.00%) than that of mustard diet but there was no significant (P> 0.05) differences between the ALD value of linseed, sesame and mustard diets. Among the animal proteins tested, both HCOOH and H2S04 treated fish silages, silkworm and deoiled silkworm pupae produced significantly (P< 0.05) the better APD and TPD values than that of fish meal diet. The APD and TPD values of various animal protein diets varied between 80.23 to 85.21 % and 84.18 to 89.08% respectively. The TPD values for the ingredients showed similar trends. In general, ALD values for all the diets tested were higher than those of the APD values. The results of the study indicated that L. rohita may be able to utilize the above mentioned ingredients efficiently.

To study the apparent and true protein digestibility coefficient of some plant and animal proteins for rohu, Labeo rohita using them as sole source of protein in diet.

Mustard (Brassica juncea) oilcake, linseed (Linum usitatissimum), sesame (Sesamum indicum) and raw soybean (Glycine max) meals were collected from local market. Fish meal was procured from Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), Dhaka. Dried silkworm was collected from Rajshahi Sericulture Board, Rajshahi. Deoiled silk worm pupae was prepared in the laboratory by deoiling with Folch's reagent. Two type of fish silages (HCOOH and H2S04 treated) were prepared rom underutilized marine fishes of mixed origin such as phasa {Setipinna taty),olua (Coilia dussumieri). tapasi (Polynemus paradiscus), small lotia (Harpodon nehereus) and small poa (Jonius argentatus). After ensilagation, finely ground wheat bran was added to each type of silage in the ratio of 3: 1 0 (wt. of wheat bran: wt. of fish silage) and dried in the sun. After drying, the silage was ground into powder. Before formulation all the selected ingredients were subjected to proximate composition analysis. For trial I, four semi-purified test diets were formualted using plants proteins such as mustard, linseed, sesa me and soybean meal as sole source of protein. Diets were formulated to contain 30% protein, 10-12% lipid and 10% crude fibre. Because of the comparatively low protein contents in mustard, linseed and sesame, it was not possible to formulate diets containing more than 30% protein. For trial II, five semi-purified diets containing 35 % protein were formulated using fish meal, silkworm upae meal, deoiled silkworm pupae meal, HCOOH and H2S04 treated fish silage as sole source of protein Proximate alaysis of feed ingredients, diets and faeces samples were performed with NFE (nitrogen-free extract) being determined by difference. Chromic oxide was determined by using the wet- digestion technique. Percentage apparent nutrient digestibility was calculated. True digestibility coefficients were calculated by correcting apparent digestibility data for metabolic faecal losses (expressed as g per 100 g diet). Differences in digestibility coefficients were tested for significance (P< 0.05) by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. Standard error (± S.E.) were calculated to indicate the range of means tested.
