Nutrient Uptake and Yield Response of T. Aman Rice Varieties as Affected by Planting Treatments

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to study the performance of and nutrient uptake by Nizersail and BR-1 1 with 4 planting treatments, consisting of variable seedling age and time of planting. Seedling age more than 60 day transplanting later than September 3, decreased significantly the grain yields of both varieties. Transplanting on 18th September with 75 days-old seedling gave reasonable grain yield of Nizersail as compared to negligible grain yield of BR- 11. The concentrations of plant nutrients at three stages of crop growth of both the varieties were determined. The contents of N, P, K and Fe were maximum at 30 DAT and then showed progressive decline. Determination of sulfur and N:S ratio in the straw indicated that both the varieties suffered from inadequate supply of sulfur at 30 DAT and at harvest the ratios became similar and satisfactory. The nutrient concentrations in the straw was influenced very little by the planting treatments but higher uptake of nutrients by the plant lops at harvest occured for the earlier two planting treatments than the latter ones.

Objectives:

To study the nutrient uptake behaviour of a local and modern variety with variable seedling age and time of planting

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the BRRI experimental farm at Joydebpur during the 1982 T. Aman Season with two rice varieties i.e. Nizersail and BR-11 under 4 planting treatments. The treatments applied were T₁ (30 days old seedlings planted on 4th August two seedlings/ hill; spacing 25 cm x 15 cm). T₂ (45 days-old seedlings planted on 19th August, two seedlings/ hill; spacing: 25 cm x 15 cm). T₃ (60 days-old seedlings plan ted on 3rd September: four seedlings/ hill; spacing: 15 cm x 10 cm) and T₄ (75 days-old seedlings, planted on 18th September; four seedlings/ hill; spacing: 15 cm x 10 cm). The experiment was laid out in split plot design, with planting treatments in the main plot and varieties in the sub-plot. NPK fertilizers @ 40-40-20 kg/ ha (N P205-K20) were all applied as basal for both the varieties. The experiment site soil had pH-6.5, organic matter 1.56 percent, total N11 percent, available-P- 10 ppm, exchangeable K-65 ppm, S04-S-27 ppm Fe-39 ppm. Mn-26.3 ppm, Zn-1.3 ppm and Cu-0.98 ppm. Plant samples were collected at 30 DAT. 60 DAT and harvest for determining the concentration of nutrient elements. Total uptake data for the nutrient elements by plant tops were determined from the samples collected at harvest.
