Air, Water and Nitrogen Dynamics in Paddy Soils Ii. Effect of Transformation of Residual Sulfur on Soil Fertility and Yield of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field moist soil samples were collected from the depths of 0-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm of two plots (one treated with N and the other with NPKS) and analyzed to see the changes in electrical conductivity and concentration of NH₄-N, NO₃-N and S0₄,-S over the seasons of a year. Results indicated that the concentration of sulfate increased in the pre-monsoon period, and then decreased during monsoon and again increased in the winter. The electrical conductivity of soil extracts also decreased in wet period showing a good relation with S0₄ concentration. The residue of applied sulfur increased the water soluble, adsorbed, organic and total sulfur content of soil but decreased the concentration of NO₃ and NH₄.

Objectives:

To see the seasonal changes in S0₄ concentration in paddy fields and its effect on N fertility and yield of rice.

Methodology:

Eutric gleysol (silt loam paddy soil) at the depths of 0-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm of two plots were collected from different periods i. e. ApriI (pre- monson), June (mid-monson), September (post monsoon) and November of 1991. The plots received N (plot 1) and NPKS (plot 2) treatments from 1978 to 1988. The soiI samples were immediately transfered to the laboratory, preserved in refrigerator and analyzed for NH₄-N, NO₃-N, SO₄ S and EC following some standard methods (Page et al. 1982). In addition, the samples of April were air dried and extracted separately with 0.15% CaCl₂ (Williams and Steinberg 1959), monocatcium phosphate containing 500 ppm P (Page et al., 1982), NaHCO₃ (Bardsley and Lancaster 1960) and HN0₃ plus HF to see the changes in water soluble plus loosely bound, adsorbed, organic and total sulfur level respectively due to fertilization. The results reported in this paper are means of three replicated analyses.

Achievement/Findings:

Results indicate that in addition to total and organically bound forms, the residual sulfur also remarkably increased the loosely bound plus water soluble and adsorbed forms that helped desorption and loss of N0₃from surface soil to ground water/deeper layers. Under reduced condition, however, this residual sulfur of available pool is reduced easily and creates sulfur as well as micronutrients deficiency. Therefore, proper dose and time/season of sulfur application should be found-out through further studies for sustained soil fertility.
