Selection Through Combined Effect of an Ova, Genetic Parameters and Score Index and Their Relative Efficiency in Mungbean (phaseolus Aureus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a study with 9 varieties/ lines the Anova for the characters studied were highly significant except for pod length and number of seeds per pod. The yield in kg per hectare was found to be highest in 7715 (820.50) followed by 7704 (675.67) and 7706 (367.34). The value for 7706 and 7704 were identical but not 7715. Heritability. genetic advance in percentage of mean. genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were studied and found that the major portion of the total ver iation was contributed by the genotype components. The highest genetic gain with high heritability observed for yield per hectare. yield per plant, days to maturity. plant height and number of pods per plant. Considerable grlnetic gain with high heritability observed for 1000 seed weight. The selection based on score Index. 7706 and 7715 scored the top in the list followed by 7704 and 7839. Only 4 selected out of 9 varieties/lines. This is 44 -I. selection pressure. For combined action of Anova, genetic parameter and score Index 7706 found to be the best due to shorter duration. The study revealed that the variety fits in Anova and genetic parameter fits the Score Index. Score Index was more simple and comprehensive than other methods used.

Objectives:

To find out the effectiveness of the three methods ( Anova, genetic parameters and Score Index) of selection separately and in combination of selection indices for the simultaneous improvement of grain yield and other yield contributing characters.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during the Kharif season and sown on the 17^thApril 1980 at BARI Sub-Station Pabna. In the experiment 9 varieties/lines used were collected from India with a check of Bangladeshi variety. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 5m X 3m. Fertilizer used at the rate of 20 Kg N, 40 Kg P₂O₅ and 20 Kg Kia per hectare. The whole amount of P₂0₅ and K₂0 and the half of the N, were applied during the final land preparation. The rest half of N was used after two weeks of germination. The spacing maintained from line to line was 30 cm and plant to plant was 5cm. Two weeding were given. One after 20 days of sowing and another after 35 days after sowing. One irrigation was given before the first weeding. The data were collected on yield and different yield contributing characters viz; days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod, 1000 seed weight, yield per plant and yield per hectare on the averages of 10 plants per replication. The yield per hectare were statistically analyzed for Anova, genetic parameters and score index to evaluate the best performer on the basis of yield and yield contributing characters.
