Preventing Post-harvest Deterioration of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Sugarcane Research Institute (SRI) to study, in quantitative term, the prevention of deterioration of sugarcane after harvest. Stale cane, suffers from gradual qualitative deterioration in terms of increased brix, reduced cane weight, pol, purity and recoverable sugar. But these qualities were retained when stale cane were subjected to the three treatments, namely spraying with water or formalin and covering with sugarcane trash, were found statistically effective in preventing the deterioration of cane as compared with the cane left uncared (check). These treatments were proved to be highly effective in reducing the qualitative losses under different Weather conditions.

Objectives:

To study the effectiveness of some of the most common and easily available processes in preventing the post harvest deterioration of sugarcane.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at SRI farm. The cane variety Co. 1158, planter on 15^thNovember, 1976 was grown under rainfed conditions from planting to harvest and all standard management, fertilizations and other intercultural practices wen followed. The experiment consisted of these independent trials at intervals of 40 days in order to represent early (December), mid (late January) and late (early March) crushing season. Consequently, the age of the crop varied from 388 days to 453 days. Each of the above mentioned trials followed the same procedures out lined: Random samples of 504 canes, representing average cane stand of the field, were harvested, detrashed, grouped, equally into 84 bundles. Weight of each bundle was recorded. Twelve such bundles representing 4 treatments with 3 replications were reweighed and chemically analysed for brix. pol, purity and recovery on each day at 24 hours interval starting from the date of harvest as 00 hours over a period of 7 days. For control or any treatment, the weight loss due to staleness was obtained by subtracting the final weight of canes at the time of chemical analysis from the initial weight of respective bundles. For brix, pol, purity or % recovery, the records obtained from the samples analysed on starting day were taken as initials. Loss in tons cane/a was calculated on the basis of assuming cane yield of 30 tons/a. The effectiveness of any treatment in reducing deterioration was obtained through the quantitative difference between any parameter (pol, purity or % recovery etc.) of control and of a particular treatment (sprayed or covered.)
