Ground water samples were  collected from twelve selected  bore-holes at different locations In the Barind Tract of  Rajshahi in order to determine the chemistry of these samples for  16  parameters.Water quality as determined from the chemical analyses of the  samples. Collected from  shallow (<30  m) and intermediate (30  - 100 m) aquifers, revealed that In  both the  Atral valley  and Midland these aquifers contain low  sodium water with  moderate salinity. The aquifer in the  Mahananda valley contains low sodium water  with  higher salinity.

To the use of ground water in  order to  meet  up the  requirement of water for irrigation.

Twelve  exploratory bore-holes were  made upto depths varying from 100  to  150  meter by  rotary drilling method. A large number of ground water samples were collected for necessary analyses from various depths of the bore-holes. The water sampler is a simple device  having a 150  metre long electrical cable with a manually operated winch. The  free end of the cable is fixed  up with  a  stainless steel  cylinder that has two  parts. the bucket and the  cap. The  cap assembly contains a small motor and a nozzle that serves both  as inlet  and outlet of water. To open  or shut the mouth of the  nozzle the cap assembly can be operated electrically with the  help of a controlling switch attached to the  winch. Ni-Cd battery was used as the  source of power.  The  cylinder was lowered down keeping the mouth of the nozzle  shut. On  reaching the  desired depth for  collection, the mouth was  opened allowing time  for filling up of water inside the bucket. The  mouth was  then shut again and the  cylinder was  lifted  to the surface for collection of water sample. The  sample bottles used for collecting water had earlier been treated with deionzed water. Each sample was  divided and collected in  two  bottles, one  being acid  free for organic material determination and the  other containing acid for determining cations. Various water samples. after collection, were  immediately sent to the Nuclear Chemistry Laboratory. INST. AERE, Savar. Their physical appearance was observed. Whenever any suspended  impurities  were observed they were removed by filtration. These samples were  kept in  a refrigerator for subsequent analysis. All the reagents used for analytical purposes, were  of pure grade and obtained from  BDH  (U. K) and E. Merck  (Germany). In every  experiment. double-distilled de-ionized water was used so as to  avoid any contamination. pH values of various water  samples were determined with a digital  pH meter OP-211I 1 (Radelkis. Budapest). Electrical conductivities (EC) of these were recorded with a digital conductivity meter (Bibby  SMC1 Conductivity Meter,  J. Bibby,  England). Total  dissolved solid  materials (TDS) of each  sample was determined by evaporating 100 ml of the water sample in a platinum dish  over a water bath. The  amounts of metallic ions  present in  these samples were determined (USEPA 1979)  by  an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, using acetylene/air  or  nitrous/ acetylene gas  mixture. The  amount of sulphate was estimated gravimetrically (Rand  1977); and  the chloride and  nitrate by ion selective method (Rand  1977). Water soluble carbonates and  bi-carbonates were determined volumetrically by using  0.1N H2 S04 in presence  of phenolphthalein and methyl orange indicator (Rand I977). The determination of boron  (B) in samples was carried out with a Pye-Unicam (Model No. SP-8-100) UV-spectrophotometer, using  carmine initially and then curcumin was adopted (Rand 1977).

The  pH  values of  the  samples varied   from  6.25 to  7.34. Bangladesh Pollution  Board has a recommended standard  value  (water quality, 1976) for pH, which is in between  6.5 and  9.2 for drinking water. ·There exists  a wide variation with  the values of EC. 248-866 µS cm-1 and TDS,  180-498 mg/1 with  these samples. Free carbon dioxide  values were between 12-70 mg/1. It is observed that the ground water has generally an appreciable amount of  sodium and potassium. The sodium concentration  ranged from  23-100 mg/ 1. Higher values of sodium and  potassium may  be due to adverse environmental effect-of the Farakka barrage. This problem needs further detailed studies. Total  dissolved solids (TDS) generally add  up  the   total amou nt of all the  dissolved constituents in water. The dissolved solid  concentration  in ground water of the  area of study. ranged from  180  to 498 mg/ 1. Hence. there is a wide  variation of TDS values in ground water samples of the study area. Taking the information together with   the  analytical data, it  can be  concluded that the  quality of water of the  study area is good  for human consumption and  also  for agriculture.
