Effect of Zinc and Sulfur on the Yield and Quality of Rice Straw

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment using four levels of sulfur and zinc each Was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm, Mymensingh, from May to October, 1982 to study the effect of zinc and sulfur fertilization on yield and quality of rice straw. Results indicate that sulfur and zinc had significant effect on the yield of rice straw but their interaction did not affect straw yield significantly. Application of 5 and 30 Kg/ha of zinc and sulfur respectively gave the highest yield. The protein content gradually increased with the application of 5 Kg Zn/ha and 30 Kg S/ha and then decreased; the reverse was in the case of starch.

Objectives:

To study the effect of sulfur and zinc on the yield and quality of rice straw during aman season.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in a typical rice growing soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University farm. Mymensingh which had initial content of 12 ppm available sulfur and 1.6 ppm available zinc during May to October, 1982. Levels of sulfur used were 0, 20, 30 and 40 kg/ha from gypsum and those of zinc were 0,2,5 and 8 kg/ha from zinc oxide. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 6 x 3m. Thirty-day old seedlings of BR3 were transplanted on 22 May, 1982 using three seedlings per hill at the spacing of 25 x 15 cm. The land was fertilized with 80 kg N, 55 kg P₂0₅ and 40 kg K₂O per hectare from urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash respectively. One third of N and full doses of P,K,S and Zn were applied one day prior to transplantation of seedlings and was thoroughly mixed with the soil. The rest of N was topdressed in two equal splits at 25 and 55 days of transplanting g. Sulfur and zinc were applied as per treatments . The re was sufficient rainfall during the whole growing season and no irrigation was needed. The intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Ten hills were randomly selected from each plot to collect data pertinent to plant height, number of tillers per hill and straw for laboratory analysis. The harvested hills were washed, sundried and ground for estimating protein and starch content following the methods outlined by AOAC. The crop was harvested at 132 days of transplanting from a sampled area of 10m² for yield data. The crops were threshed immediately after harvest, sun dried for three days and the weight of straw was recorded. The collected data were statistically analysed and the means were compared by DMRT.
