Fecundity and Some Relationships of Grass Carp (ctenopharyngodon Ideila. Cuv. and Val.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The fecundity of Ctenopharyngodon idelta (Cuv. and Val.) was estimated to be 1,28.000 to 2,70.000 eggs for a size range of 48.0cm.- 73.0cm. Mathematical relationships between fecundity-total length fecundity-body weight and fecundity-ovary weight were found to be linear. The fecundity was more directly related to the ovary weight. The total length-body weight relationship did not follow the well-known "Cube law".

Objectives:

Study have practical value and would be useful in the development of fishery of this species in Bangladesh

Methodology:

Fish samples were collected from Torigt Fish Seed Multiplication Farm, about 30 km from Dhaka city. Twenty five ripe female fishes were collected from January 1994 to December 1994. The fishes were caught monthly by seine net. Eye estimation and common experience were used to identify the ripe females. The total length and body weight of these fishes were measured in ern and g respectively. Before weighing, excess moisture was dried off from fish with a blotting paper. The ovaries were dissected out, dried with the help of blotting paper, weighed in g and then preserved in 5% formalin. Gravimetric method was followed for counting the eggs. Only the mature eggs were counted. The relationship between length-weight, and standard length- total length of 25 fishes were calculated by least square method (LeCren 1951). The total length was measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the caudal fin by a centimeter scale fitted on a wooden board. Standard length was taken from the tip of the snout up to the fork in the same way.
