Performance of Turmeric-legume Intercropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati hill district to find out the suitable spacing (50 cm x 15 cm, 50 cmx 20 cm and 50 cm x 25 cm) of turmeric in intercropping with country bean and yard long bean during 1991-92 and 1992-93. The result showed that the highest turmeric yield (26.05 and 28.50 t/ha) was obtained from the turmeric spacing of 50 cm x 15 cm with yard long bean in 1991-92 and 1992-93, respectively. But country bean and yard long bean yields showed highest in their respective sole crop. The result also revealed that highest turmeric equivalent yield (56.79 and 52.58 t/ha), LER (1.97 and 1.91), gross return (av. Tk 109365/ha), net return (av. Tk 78365/ha) and benefit cost ratio (av. 3.53) was obtained from turmeric spacing (50 cm x 15 cm) with intercropped country bean. Country bean was found better than yard long bean as intercropping with turmeric.

Objectives:

To find out the proper spacing of turmeric on turmeric-legumes intercropping system in the hilly region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati in the hill region during 1991-92 and 1992-93 under rainfed condition. The soil of the experimental area was silty loam having pH 6.7. The treatments consisted of three plant spacings of turmeric (15, 20 and 25 cm) with a constant row spacing of 50 cm in intercropping with country bean and yard long bean. There were altogether nine treatments. The variety used for turmeric, yard long bean and country bean were, Dimla, extra long black seeded and local, respectively. Unit plot size was 3 m x 3 m. Two pits of country bean were accommodated in middle of the plot for both sole and intercrop situations. After every two rows of turmeric, yard long bean (YLB) was sown maintaining a spacing of 100 cm x 25 cm for both sole and intercropping. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 15 t cowdung and 90-72-120 kg of N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 /ha, respectively, both in sole turmeric and intercrop combinations. Whole amount of cowdung and phosphorus were applied during final land preparation, and nitrogen and potassium were applied as topdressing in two splits at 35 and 60 DAP (days after planting). In the case of sole legumes, 10 tons of cowdung and 23-48-90 kg of N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 /ha, were applied during final land preparation as basal. Rhizomes of turmeric were planted on 28 April 1991 and 25 April 1992 and seeds of country bean and YLB were sown on 12 July in 199 J and 16 July in 1992. Country bean (Lublab purpureusi was allowed to climb on rnacha (bamboo support) and bamboo structure was made in 3 m x 3 m size. Single bamboo stick was used for yard long bean (Vigna unguiculata ssp sesquipedalisi cultivation. Earthing up and weedings were done at 35 and 60 DAP both in sole turmeric and intercrop situation. Beans were infested by aphids and malathion was sprayed to control. The marketable pods of bean were harvested time to time. Time required for seeding to complete harvest of country bean and YLB were 90 and 185 days, respectively. Ten plants of turmeric were selected randomly and morphological and yield contributing characters were recorded. But the marketable fresh yield of rhizome was recorded from whole plot basis. The crop duration for turmeric was around 262 days. Land equivalent ratio (LER) values were computed according to Shaner et al. (1982). Cost and benefit analysis was done for each treatment on a hectare basis taking into account the market value of each crop. Turmeric equivalent yield of bean (TEY b) was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that turmeric with the spacing 50 cm x 15 cm intercropped with country bean gave higher turmeric equivalent yield, gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio than other inter or sole crop combinations. So, farmers of the hilly region should be motivated to grow turmeric intercropped with country bean instead of sole turmeric.
