Fertility Evaluation of Three Agriculturally Important Soils (trishal Thana) of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Soil samples were collected from three regions of Trishal thana of Mymensingh District at 0-15 cm depth in order to study the chemical properties. The pH values of all regions were medium acidic to slightly acidic, ranged from 5.22 to 6.46. The organic matter and total nitrogen contents, and also the available contents of phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper and iron of soils varied widely. The organic matter, total nitrogen content of all the regions were low. Available phosphorus of all soils was low to optimum level, whereas available potassium was low to medium level. Available calcium, magnesium and iron were optimum level. Available zinc was found deficient and available sulphur was low to medium level.

Objectives:

1. To obtain information related to the nutrient status of three soils (Trishal Thana) of Bangladesh and to identify the nutrient related constraints to increase yield of crops.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, in order to determine the essential nutrient elements present in the soils of Trishal Thana of Mymensingh district. Site Selection: With a view to conduct a nutrient survey three regions of Trishal Thana of Mymensingh district were selected. Region 1 includes Dhanikhola union & part of Boilor union. Region 2 includes kanihari union and part of kanthal union and Region 3 includes Trishal union and part of Mathbari union. Sample Collection: Soil samples were collected during the dry season from the farmers fields upto plough depth (0-15 cms). Methods of chemical analyses Soil pH: Soil pH were determined by glass electrode pH meter. Organic matter: Organic carbon was determined titrimetrically using Walkley and Black method with oxidation of organic matter with potassium dichromate (K₂Cr₂O₇). Total Nitrogen: Total nitrogen content in soil was determined by semi micro kjeldahl method. Available phosphorus: Available phosphorus present in soil was determined by Olsen’s method calorimetrically. Available potassium: Potassium was determined with the help of flame emission spectra photometer at the wave length of 768nm. Available Sulphur: Sulphur was determined by turbid metric method with the help of a spectrophotometer. Available Calcium: Calcium was determined by complexometric method of titration using Na₂-EDTA (Na₂H₂C₁₀H_12OBN₂.2H₂O) as a complexion agent. Available magnesium: Magnesium was analyzed by complexometric method of titration using disodium ethylene diamine tetra acetale (Na₂H₂C₁₀H_12O8N₂.2H₂O). Available Zn & Fe: Available zinc and iron were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer set at the wave length of 213.9nm and 248.3nm respectively
