A field trial was conducted at Agronomy research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during the period from March 21 to August 4, 2013 to find out the optimum dose of herbicide to control weed in maize field. Results showed that number of weed / meter, weed control efficiency (WCE), plant height, length of cob, number of seed/ cob, individual cob weight, 1000 seeds weight and yield of maize were significantly influenced by different weed management methods. The highest 108, 254 (weeds/m2) were recorded in control plot at 25 & 50 DAE, respectively. The lowest 22 & 72 weed/m2 were recorded in T3 Treatment followed by T2 treatment respectively. The highest WCE (weed control efficiency)  89.91% & 72% was found in T2 treatment at 25 & 50 DAE, respectively followed by T3 treatment. The highest no of seeds/cob (404) 1000 seeds weight (263.6gm) individual cob weight (205.05 gm) yield (6.35t/ha) was obtain from T2 treatments and the lowest was found in T5 treatment. The result revealed that spraying of herbicide (Atrazine) @ 2.5 L/ha would be the most effective to control weeds & in terms of economic return for Maize production.

To find out the optimum dose of herbicide to control weed in maize field.

A field trial was conducted at Agronomy research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during the period from March 21 to August 4, 2013. The soil was silty clay loam with pH 6.3 belonging to agro Echological Zone 28. The treatments were: T1 = spraying of G-maize (Atrazine) @ 2 lit/ha, T2 = spraying of G-maize @ 2.5 lit/ha, T3 = spraying of G-maize @ 3 lit/ha, T4 = two hand weeding at 25 & 50 DAE (Days after Emergence), T5 = no spray (control). The trial was set up in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size 3.5m x´ 5m. The crop was fertilized with cowdung 10 t/ha 250-50-110-45 kg/ha NPKS in the form of Urea, TSP, MoP, Zypsum, respectively. One third of urea and all others fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Seeds of maize (Var. BARI Hybrid Maize -7) were sown on 21 March. Remaining 2/3 urea were top-dressed in two equal splits at 30 and 60 DAE followed by irrigation. Herbicide spray was done 25 April. A light irrigation was given after sowing for uniform emergence of seeds. Weed samples were collected using 50cm ´ 50cm quadrate, from randomly selected two places of each plot at 30 days interval in two times. Number and dry weight of weeds were recorded. Weed control efficiency (WCE)) was calculated according to varshney (1999) using following formula: WCE (%) = 100 where A = Dry weight of weeds in no weeding plots and B = Dry weight of weeds in treated plots. The crop was harvested at 4th August, yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically and mean separations were done by LSD test.

The result revealed that spraying of herbicide (Atrazine) @ 2.5 L/ha would be the most effective to control weeds & in terms of economic return for Maize production in Kharif-1 season at Joydebpur region. This is first year result, more study will be needed to confirm the result.
