Effect of Plant Spacing and Number of Plants/hill on the Yield and Yield Attributes of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment with three plant spacing and three different number of plants/hill of maize was conducted in the kharif seasons of 1987 and 1988 to find out their effects on yield and yield attributes. Plant spacing and limber of plants/hill affected the grain yield. With the increase in plant spacing, the grain yield decreased. The spacing of 75 cm x 25 cm gave the highest grain yield of 2.69 t/ha and 2.32 t/ha in 1987 and 1988, respectively. The 75 cm x 75 cm spacing gave the lowest one. The ear length, number of grains/ear and 1000-grain weight were higher with wider spacing, The single plant/hill gave significantly the of 2.43 t/ha and 2.12 t/ha in 1987 and 1988, respectively, along with higher ear length number of grains/ear and 1000-grain weight, and the lowest yield from 3 plants/hill. The 75 cm x 2) cm spacing with single plant/hill gave significantly the highest yield (3.20 t/ha).

Objectives:

To determine the optimum spacing as well as number of plants/hill for maximum yield.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during the kharif season of 1987 and 1988 in a silty loam soil having pH range of 5.5 to 6.0. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with two factors, namely plant spacing as 75 cm x 25 cm, 75 cm x 50 cm and 75 cm x 75 cm along with number of plants/hill as I. 2 and 3 replicated thrice. The treatments were randomly assigned to unit plots of each block. The unit plot size was 5 m x 3 m. The variety Barnali was used as experimental material.The land was properly pulverized. The first year crop was sown on 29 March 1987 and that of second year on 9 April 1988. The land was fertilized with 120, 70, 50, 20 and 5 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0, S and Zn per hectare from urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively. The full amount of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc oxide along with one third of urea were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The remaining urea was used in two equal halves 30 and 60 days after sowing (DAS) as side-dressing before earthling up. Only one irrigation was given on 7 April 1987 but none for the second year. Thinning, gap filling and weeding were done properly. Heavy rainfall and storm hampered intercultural operations and affected the crop to some extent in both the years. The crop was harvested at 102 and 112 DAS for 1987 and 1988, respectively. Data on yield components were taken form 10 randomly selected plants per plot, whereas the yield estimation was made from whole plot after harvest. The threshed grains were sun dried and weighed. The grain weight was adjusted at 14% moisture. Data were analyzed as per 33 factorial experiment (Gomez and Gomez, 1984; Zaman et al., 1982) and the mean data were adjudged by least significant difference test.
