Productivity and Profitability of Cabbage Intercropped with Vegetables

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Joydcvpur, Gazipur during two consecutive years 1985-86 and 1986-87 to study the effect of intercropping cabbage with other vegetables (spinach. leaf amaranth. tomato and onion) on yield and economic performance of crops. Eleven treatments which included six inter # and relay cropped treatments and sale cabbage spinach, leaf amaranth. tomato and onion were tested. Highest cabbage and other vegetables yields were obtained from their respective sale crops. However. highest cabbage equivalent yields (Av.50.72 t/ha) were obtained when intercropped with tomato. Highest land equivalent ratio was obtained (Av. 1.72) from cabbage + leaf amaranth and relayed with onion treatments but this treatment had a lower equivalent yield and net return than cabbage + tomato intercropped treatment. Highest average net return (Tk. 42128/ha) was obtained from cabbage intercropped with tomato.

Objectives:

To study the effect of inter cropping cabbage with other vegetables (spinach, leaf amaranth, tomato and onion)

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BARI, Joydebpur during two consecutive years 1985- 86 and 1986- 87. The soil of the experimental site was silty clay having pH of 6.4. Eleven treatments, of which six were inter and relay cropped treatments and sole cabbage, spinach, leaf amaranth, tomato and onion crops were tested in randomized complete block design with three replications. Each unit plot size was 5 x 4.5m. Two TOWS each of spinach, leaf amaranth and tomato were accommodated between the cabbage rows. Relayed onion was preceded by spinach, leaf amaranth and cabbage. During 1985-86, cabbage, leaf amaranth, spinach and tomato were seeded on 9 and 10 November and onion relayed on 11 January, 1986 but in 1986-R7 leaf amaranth and spinach were seeded on 8 November, 1986 and cabbage and tomato on 15 November and onion relayed on l IJanuary, 1987. Irrigation was given as and when necessary. The crop duration for cabbage, tomato, leaf amaranth, spinach and onion were 93, 103, 69, 69 and 84 days respectively. Crop equivalent yields in terms of the main crop (base) was used as criteria for evaluating the productivity of intercropping systems. Total productivity (cabbage equivalent) was calculated as suggested by Anjaneyula et al. (1982). Besides, Land equivalent ratios (LER) were computed following method used at IRRI, 1983. The cost and return analysis was done for each treatment per unit area basis.
