Effect of Storage Containers on Health and Quality of Rice Seed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the Laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Patuakhali Science and Technology University to evaluate the performance of different kinds of storage containers for maintaining quality of rice seeds in the farmers’ house. There were six treatments viz. Motka with loose lid (T₁), Motka with air tight lid (T₂), Painted Motka with loose lid (T₃), Painted motka with air tight lid (T₄), Plastic dram with loose lid (T₅) and Plastic dram with air tight lid (T₆). Significantly, the lowest moisture content (12.65%) and insect damaged seed (224.75 kg^-1) were recorded in seeds stored in airtight plastic drum and the highest 14.28% and 472.25 kg^-1 seed, respectively were observed in motka with loose lid. Maximum number of germinated seeds and healthy seedlings and minimum number of abnormal seedlings, diseased seedlings and the prevalence of fungi were found in airtight plastic drum, followed by airtight painted motka. From these studies, it was observed that rice seed preservation in airtight plastic drum helped in improving farmers’ rice seed quality.

Objectives:

To identify the suitable storage containers for the preservation of quality seeds in the farmers’ house.

Methodology:

Farmers were selected randomly from the village Jhatra under Dumki upazilla of Patuakhali district to find out the effect of storage containers on health and quality of rice seed. Seeds of Dudkolom varieties harvested from T-Aman, 2009 were used in the experiment.The experiment was conducted at farmers’ house and Plant Pathology laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Patuakhali Science and Technology University during 2009 following CRD. The seeds were kept in different storage containers viz. motka (earthen container), motka painted with cowdung and plastic dram. One set of these containers were closed with lid and made air tight with a thick layer of clay soil around the margin of the lid and another set were covered loosely. There were six treatments viz. Motka with loose lid (T₁), Motka with air tight lid (T₂), Painted Motka with loose lid (T₃), Painted motka with air tight lid (T₄), Plastic dram with loose lid (T₅) and Plastic dram with air tight lid (T₆). Three farmers were participated in this study. One farmer was considered as a replication. From each storage container, 500g seed sample was taken from the middle portion of each container which was kept in brown paper packet and labeled properly and preserved at 5 to 8 ⁰C in a refrigerator for subsequent use. Three layers of well-moistened blotter paper were placed at the bottom of 9 cm plastic petridish. Four hundred seeds of each treatment were counted at random and placed on the moist blotter paper at the rate of 25 seeds per plate. The seeds in the plates were incubated at room temperature under alternate cycle of 12 hours darkness and 12 hours under NUV light in the incubation room. Observations on the presence of fungi were made after 7 days of incubation.

Achievement/Findings:

From the findings of the study it may be concluded that preservation of seeds in plastic drum is proved to be better for maintaining high quality healthy seeds in the storage under farmers’ condition. The present findings will help for the preservation of high quality healthy seed.
