The highest number of mating (14 times) and mating interval (63 hours) was recorded in couple no. 4 but the highest mating duration (33 hours) was observed in couple no. 2. The maximum egg laying tendency of Podontia 14- punctata was for the inner wall of the pot. The mean duration of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larvae, prepupae and pupae  was 4.16, 3.55, 3.90, 3.60, 2.40 and 24.80 days, respectively.  The mean length of 1st, 2nd , 3rd and 4th  instar larvae were 2.81mm,  9.27 mm,  16.42 mm and 22.10 mm, respectively and head width of first, 2nd , 3rd and 4th  instar larvae was 0.72 mm, 1.63 mm, 2.45 mm and 3.08 mm, respectively.  The highest leaf consumption was recorded in 4th instar larva and the lowest was in 1st instar larva on both weight and area basis. The average leaf (on weight and area basis) consumed by female was greater than those of male. The highest mortality was found in all larval instars and adult stage of hog-plum beetle after 24 hours at each dose of superior 505 EC (T5 and T6 treatments) both in laboratory and field trials.

1.To observe mating and oviposition behavior of hog-plum beetle,

2. To know the different stages of development in the life cycle of hog-plum beetle

3.To study the morphometrics of different stages and appendages of hog-plum beetle,

4.To measure the quantity of leaf consumed by larvae and adults by area and weight basis, and

5.To find out the most suitable insecticide(s) with appropriate dose(s) for suppressing both larvae and adults of hog-plum beetle.

A set of three experiments on hog-plum beetle, Podontia 14-punctata were carried out in the laboratory of Entomology Department  of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU), Dumki, Patuakhali as well as at the hog-plum orchard of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), BARI, Rahmatpur, Barisal, Bangladesh, during April to September, 2012. The laboratory experiment was carried out under normal room temperature (32   ± 0C) and relative humidity (85 ± 5%) with a 14 ± 2:10±2 light and dark cycle (L:D) following completely randomized design (CRD). The field experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 7 treatments and 3 replications. Study on biology of P. 14-punctata under laboratory condition - After collecting, each couple was released in a separate plastic pot provided with fresh hog-plum leaflets wrapping with cotton soaked in sugar solution. The mouth of the each pot was covered with mosquito nets (25 mesh) by using rubber band. Data on the time of beginning and end of mating, mating frequency from 7.00 AM to 10 PM, duration of each mating, interval of mating and oviposition activity were recorded by close observation. Developmental period of 1st instar larvae was measured by the time elapsed between larval hatching to 1st moulting. In this way the duration of 2nd, 3rd and 4th (final) instars were recorded.Measurement was taken just after each moult with measuring scale in mm. The leaflet consumption by different instars of larvae of P. 14-punctata was measured in terms of leaflet weight (g) and area basis consumed. Effect of chemical insecticides with their doses for suppressing hog-plum beetle - Treatments of different doses of chemical insecticides were T1 = Chita 48 EC @ 0.75 ml/L of water, T2 = Chita 48 EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water, T3 = Fighter 2.5 EC @ 0.75 ml/L of water, T4 = Fighter 25 EC @ 1.0 ml/L of water, T5 = Superior 50.5 EC @ 0.75 ml/L of water, T6 = Superior 50.5 EC @ 1.0 ml /L of water and T7 = Untreated control. These treatments were used in laboratory and field condition. Each treatment was replicated 3 times.

Most of the couples was started their mating from 6:30 am and they attained a peak between 8:00 to 10:30 hours in the morning. The mean duration of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larvae was 4.16, 3.55, 3.90 and 3.60 days, respectively. The mean duration prepupal and pupal period was 2.40 and 24.80 days, respectively. The highest mean length and head width were recorded in 4th instar larvae. The length and breadth of female beetle were greater than those of male beetle. The highest leaflet consumption was recorded in 4th instar larva and the lowest was in 1st instar larva on both weight and area basis. The average leaf (on weight and area basis) consumed by female was greater than those of male. The highest mortality was found in all larval instars after 24 hours at each dose of superior 505 EC (T5 and T6 treatments) both in laboratory and field trials. The results of laboratory and field trial revealed that the lower dose (0.75 ml/L of water) of Superior 505 EC may be recommended for effective suppression of instead of presently studied higher dose (1.0 ml/L of water).
