Spikelet Fertility Improvement in Rice Through the Nutrient Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during Boro seasons of 2005 to 2007 to reduce spikelet sterility and to increase the grain number per unit area. Variable combinations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulfur fertilizers were used along with different N management options in four treatments. Copper (Cu) and magnesium (Mg) spraying at maximum tillering (MT) stage was included with soil test based (STB) fertilizers dose (T₃). Grain number per unit area increased by 10-15% when STB fertilizer dose was used along with Mg and Cu spraying at MT stage (T₃) compared to BRRI recommended fertilizer rate and management (T₁). Moreover, sterility percentage decreased by about 4% in T₃. Grain number per unit area also increased by about 6% when STB fertilizer dose along with four equal splits of N (T₂) than T₁. One an average, about 8% yield was increased in T₂ and T₃ treatments compared to BRRI recommended fertilizer rate and management.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to find out the way of reducing spikelet abortion as well as spikelet sterility through nutrient management practices for increased grain yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Boro seasons of 2005 to 2007 at BRRI farm Gazipur. The soil was slightly acidic in reaction (pH 6.6) clay loam in texture. The initial soil properties were 0.1% total N, 9 ppm P and 19 meq/100g K. The treatments were, (T₁) 120-16-30-10 kg ha^-1 N-P-K-S, respectively (BRRI recommended rate) with three equal splits, (T₂) 120-16-30-10 kg^-1N-P-K-S, respectively, with four equal N splits, (T₃) 109-6-20-10 kg ha^-1 N-P-K-S, respectively, soil test based (STB) fertilizer rate with three equal N splits, along with CuSO₄ 5H₂0 (0.25%) and MgO (0.5%) spraying at maximum tilling (MT) stage and (T₄) 109-36109 kg ha^-1 N-P-K, respectively (Balanced fertilizer application, 3:1:3 ratio of N-P-K), with three equal splits of N. In T₁ , T₂ and T₃, N was applied in three equal splits at 15-20 days after transplanting (DAT), at active tillering (AT) stage and at 5 days before panicle initiation (DBPI) stage. Whereas, in T₂, N was applied four equal splits at 15-20 DAT, at AT stage, at 15-20 days before PI and 15-20 days before heading (DBH). The treatments were assigned in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Phosphorus, K and S fertilizers were applied as basal for all the treatments. The test variety was BRRI dhan29. Forty- to 45-day-old seedlings were used. Two to three seedlings per hill were transplanted in the second week of January in all three years. Data on panicles and grains per unit area, sterility percentage and grain yields were recorded and were analyzed as per Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Use of soil test based fertilizer rate along with CuSO₄ 5H₂0 (0.25%) and MgO (0.5%) spraying at maximum tilling (MT) stage and application of N fertilizer before 15-20 days of heading could reduce spikelet sterility by 2-4% and increased grain number and grain yield.
