An experiment was conducted in the field of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2001 to March 2002 to investigate the effect of different Chenopodium album control methods on growth and yield of wheat. The experiment consisted of eight treatments viz. no control of weed, one hand weeding (HW) at 25 DAE. two HW at 25 ami 50 DAE, three HW at 15,40 and 65 DAE, one spraying with 2, 4-D amine at 25 DAE, two spraying with 2, 4-D amine at 25 and 50 DAE, one HW at 25 DAE+ one spraying with 2, 4-D amine at 50 DAE and weed free for whole crop life. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Among the weed control treatments, one hand weeding at 25 DAE + one spraying of 2,4-D amine at 50 DAE was the most effective which reduced the number of C. album by 94.07% and weed dry weight by 93.41 % at harvest. One hand weeding at 25 DAB + one spraying of 2,4-D amine at 50 DAE produced 3.90 ton grain ha-1 and 7.51 ton straw ha-1 which was statistically identical with weed free treatment (3.95 ton grain ha I and 7.60 ton straw ha-1). Similar higher value of plant height (81.97 cm), number of tiller plant-1 (4.0), number of effective tiller plant-1 (2.80), number of grain spike-1 (31.3) and 1000- grain weight (38.9 g) of wheat were noted under one hand weeding at 25 DAE + one spraying of 2,4-D amine at 50 DAE treatment.

To investigate the effect of different Chenopodium album control methods on growth and yield of wheat

The experiment was carried out in the field of BAU, Mymensingh during  November 2001 to March 2002. The experiment consisted of the following treatments:

  • No weed control
  • One hand weedings at 25 days after emergence (DAE)
  • Two hand weedings at 25 and 50 DAE
  • Three hand weedings at 15,40 and 65 DAE
  • One spraying of herbicide 2, 4-D amine at 25 DAE
  • Two sprayings of herbicide 2, 4-D amine at 25 and 50 DAE
  • One hand weeding at 25 DAE + one spraying of herbicide 2. 4-D amine at 50 DAE. Weed free for whole crop life. Treatments were assigned randomly in the unit plot of 3 mX2 m in an experimental design of randomized complete block design with three replications. A fertilizer dose of 220-180-50-20 kg/ha of urea,TSP,MoP and Gypsum were applied. One-third of urea and full doses of TSP. MoP and Gypsum were applied as basal during final land preparation. The rest of urea was applied in two installments at CRI and booting stages respectively. Seeds of kanchan variety wheat were sown on 24 November 2001 with the spacing 20 cm from row to row @ 120 kg seed ha-1. Seeds of Chenopodium Album were broadcasted @ 500 seeds m-1 at the same time with wheat seeds. All recommended cultural practices were followed to raise the crop. The crop was irrigated two times viz, at CRI and booting stage. i) Weed density (no. m-2) ii) Weed dry weight (g m-2). At initial stage of crop i. e. 15 DAE weed density m-2 was counted. A quadrate of 0.25 m x 0.25 m was placed at five locations at random in each plot except the weed free plot and all the weeds inside the quadrate were counted. Finally the average value was used to determine the weed density. After counting the number. weeds in each quadrate were uprooted. washed and dried first in the sun and then in an electrical oven for 24 hours at 85°C to record the dry weight of weeds. Grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content. i) Plant height (cm) ii) Total number of tiller plant-1 iii) Number of effective tiller plant-1 iv) Number of spikelet spike-1 v) Number of grain spike-1 vi) 1000-grain weight (g) vii) Grain yield (g m-2) viii) Straw yield (gm-2). Then the yield of g m-2 was converted in t ha-1 and adjusted at 12% moisture level. Data on weed, plant characters and crop yield were statistically analyzed following analysis of variance technique and differences among the treatment means were adjudged with Duncan's Multiple Range Test.
