Experiment was conducted in the AEZ-12 at RPRS, Madaripur during Kharif I of 2008 and 2009 to evaluate the effect of Zn and B on yield and yield components of Mungbean and to determine the optimum dose of Zn and B for yield maximization. There were four levels of zinc (0, 0.75, 1.5 and 3.0 kg ha-1) and boron (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2 kg ha-1) along with a blanket dose of N20 P25 K35 S20 kg ha-1. The treatment combinations were sixteen. Experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Results showed that the combination of Zn1.5B1.0 was produced significantly higher yield (3058 kg ha-1) and (2631 kg ha-1) in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The lowest yields were found in control (Zn0B0) combination. Combined application of zinc and boron were observed superior to their single application. After two years trial, the soil pH slightly increased in all treatments and nutrients status was influenced positively. In most cases, the content of nutrients was found higher with Zn1.5B1.0 treatment. Therefore, the combination of Zn1.5B1.0 might be considered as suitable dose for mungbean cultivation in Bangladesh. But from regression analysis, the optimum treatment combination was Zn1.87 B1.24 kg ha-1 for Madaripur.

 (i) To evaluate the response of Zn and B on the yield and yield contributing characters of mungbean; and (ii) to find out a suitable dose of Zn and B for the maximization of mungbean yield

An experiment was conducted in Calcareous Low Ganges River Floodplain Soil (AEZ 12) at RPRS Madaripur during Kharif-I of 2008 and 2009 to evaluate the response of Zn and B on yield and yield components of mungbean and to estimate suitable dose for yield maximization. Sixteen treatment combinations were- T1= Zn0B0; T2= Zn0B0.5; T3= Zn0B1.0; T4= Zn0B2.0; T5= Zn0.75B0; T6= Zn0.75B0.5; T7=  Zn0.75B1.0; T8= Zn0.75B2.0; T9= Zn1.5B0; T10= Zn1.5B0.5; T11= Zn1.5B1.0; T12= Zn1.5B2.0; T13= Zn3.0B0; T14= Zn3.0B0.5; T15= Zn3.0B1.0; and T16= Zn3.0B2.0.  Each of zinc (0, 0.75, 1.5 and 3.0 kg ha-1) and boron (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2 kg ha-1) along with blanket dose N20 P25 K35 S20 kg ha-1. The soil was loamy in texture having pH 7.0,   1.22%  OM, 0.070% N, 17 µg g-1  P , 0.09 meq.100 g-1 K, 15 µg g-1  S, 11.1 meq.100 g-1 Ca, 3.2 meq.100 g-1 Mg,  0.80 µg g-1 Zn and 0.11 µg g-1  B. Experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Blanket dose of fertilizers were applied as urea, TSP, MoP and gypsum in final land preparation.  Zinc and B were applied as zinc sulphate and boric acid in the respective treatments. Seeds (BARI Mung-6) were sown @ 30 kg ha-1 with spacing of 40 cm x 10 cm on 21 February 2008 and 26 February 2009. Two weeding were done at 20 and 35 days after sowing. The diseases and insects were control properly. Harvesting was started from 20 April-27 May 2008 and 25 April-20 May 2009. Yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Yield (kg ha-1) was recorded from the whole plot technique. Post harvest soil samples were analyzed with standard methods. The data were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT.

The interaction effect between Zn and B on the yield of mungbean was found statistically significant during 2008 and 2009. The mean yield ranged from 1873-2862 kg ha-1, where highest was with T11 (Zn1.5B1.0) treatment and lowest was with T1 (Zn0B0) treatment. Yield increased over control ranged from 9.88-52.80%. After two years trial, the soil pH slightly increased in all treatments and nutrient status (macro and micro) was positive due to stover incorporation in soil. The amount of organic matter was highest 11.55% with treatment T11 and lowest was with T1 treatment. In most of the cases, the content of macro and micro nutrients were found higher with T11 treatment and lowest with T1 treatment. Regression analysis, the optimum dose of Zn was calculated from the quadratic response function and was 1.87 kg ha-1. The optimum economic dose of Zn was 1.84 kg ha-1. A positive and quadratic relationship was also found between seed yield and levels of B. The optimum dose of B from the quadratic production function was 1.24 kg ha-1. The optimum economic dose of B was 1.18 kg ha-1. Therefore, the combination of Zn1.5B1.0 might be considered as suitable dose for mungbean cultivation in Bangladesh.
