Ten soil samples representing ten different soil series (viz Khilgaon, Sayek, Belabo, Tejgaon, Gerua, Noadda, Chandra, Kalma, Naga and Karail) of the Madhupur Tract Soils were selected and analyzed to determine and establish relationship among different forms of potassium. Results of the experiments showed that the highest amount of water soluble K (0.08 cmol(+) kg-1) was found in Gerua soil and the lowest (0.01 cmol(+)kg-1) was found in Belabo soil. The highest amount of exchangeable K (0.26 cmol(+)kg-1) was found in Gerua soil while the lowest (0.06 cmol(+)kg-1) in Karail soil. The maximum amount of available K (0.34 cmol(+)kg-1) was found in Gerua soil while the lowest (0.08 cmol(+)kg-1) in Chandra soil. The highest amount of non-exchangeable K (0.59 cmol(+)kg-1) was found in Gerua soil, while the lowest (0.22 cmol(+)kg-1) was in Kalma soil series. Results also revealed a positive and significant relationship among different forms of potassium (K).

To determine the different forms of potassium and establish a relationship among different forms of potassium present in soils of the Madhupur Tract, Bangladesh.

Collection of soil samples:Ten soil samples representing ten different soil series viz. Khilgaon, Sayek, Belabo, Tejgaon, Gerua, Noadda, Chandra, Kalma, Naga and Karail the Madhupur Tract were collected for the present study. The sampling depth was 0-15 cm and the samples were collected from Bhaluka and Trishal upazila of Mymensingh district.

Preparation and analysis of the soil samples:Collected soil samples were air-dried, ground, and passed through a 2 mm sieve and preserved in plastic bottles for subsequent analysis. The weeds, stubbles etc. were removed from the samples before grinding. Soil samples were analyzed for different parameters in the laboratory of Soil Science Depertment, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.Clay fraction of < 2 µm was separated by repeated stirring-sedimentation-siphoning. The 2-20 µm fraction was separated by repeated sedimentation and siphoning, and the 20-53, 53-212 and 212-2,000 µm fractions were separated by wet-sieving. Weights of each fraction were determined to calculate the particle-size distribution. Soil pH soil was determined by Glass Electode pH meter method using soil : water ratio of 1:2.5 (Jackson, 1962). The electrical conductivity of soil was measured in 1:5 soil water suspension using a EC meter as described by Jackson (1962). The results were expressed in dSm-1. Cation exchange capacity of soil was determined by sodium saturation method as outlined by Chapman (1965). Extractable K, Ca, Mg and Na were determined by CH3COONH4 extraction method (Page, 1982). Water soluble potassium was determined in 1:5 of soil: water extract by the method adopted by Grewal and Kanwar (1966). Exchangeable potassium was calculated by subtracting the water soluble K from that of the available K extracted by CH3COONH4 (pH7.0) (Knudsen et al., 1982). Non-exchangeable potassium was determined according to Knudsen et al., (1982).

The study on different forms of soil K, and their relationship were assessed through chemical analysis of the soils collected from Madhupur Tract (AEZ 28), the major terrace soil region of Bangladesh. Release and fixation behavior of different forms of K varied due to variation in the contents of minerals affecting K chemistry in the soils. All ten terrace soils had low reserves of both mineral and nonexchangeable K and the release potential was also low. Overall condition of K fertility of these soils was low. The available K ranged from 0.08 cmol(+)kg-1 in Chandra series to 0.34 cmol(+)kg-1 was found Gerua series. There is a positive and significant relationship among different forms of potassium (K). The concentration of different forms of K in soil varies with clay contents as well as their mineralogical make up.
