The Upazila is subdivided into three physiographic units namely Norther and Eastern Hills (10180 ha), Northern and Eastern Piedmont Plain (7814 ha) and Chittagong Coastal Plain (5106 ha). Hills occupy 21.03% of the Upazila and are stretched along north-west to south-east direction. Medium hills and low hills are made up of consolidated and semi-consolidated silt stones. Piedmonts occupy 16.15% of the Upazila stretching west from foothills. High lands remain above normal flood level. Medium high lands are inundated up to 90cm for 2-4 months and medium lowlands are inundated up to 90-270 cm for 4-5 months during monsoon.  Chittagong Coastal Plain occupy 10.6% area of the Upazila and surrounded by embankments. Saline water can not inundate the area but during monsoon most of the lands remain inundated  up to 90 cm for 2-3 months. Hills are steep. Sandy loam, loam and clay loam soils are found in hills. In piedmont and coastal plains clay loam and loam soils are found.Forest occupy 3.2% area, thickets occupy 8.4% area. Horticultural crops (fruit trees) occupy 6.7%  and mixed papaya/banana+ginger+turmeric  occupy 1.1% area. In valleys rabi vegetables and kharif vegetables occupy 2.1% area. T.Aman and T.aus are the dominant crop in piedmont and coastal plain. Mangrove/fisheries occupy 2.8% area and ship breaking yard occupy 1% area. Miscellaneous area occupy 56.5 % of the Upazila which includes homestead, brick kiln, rivers and ponds.Hill soils are deficient in organic matter, N, P. Piedmont and Coastal  soils are deficient in N, P, K

1.Update soil and land resource inventory

2.Update soil analytical data base

3.Update land use/ land cover data base

4.Update crop suitability data based on changed soil and land qualities

5.Update soil fertility status/value based fertilizer recommendation for crops/cropping patterns

Aerial photo-interpretative soil and landform map of Sitakunda Upazila is prepared by using remote sensing and GIS technique. The map consists of several mapping units comprising of physiograhy, land from. land type and soil type and their proportion in different mapping units. Field survey is carried out in rabi season after harvest of T.Aman. Soils are checked by opening mini-pits along the catena following a traverse line to accommodate maximum variability. Composite soil samples are collected covering each land type and soil type at the rate of 1 sample for each 200 hectares. Data on crops/cropping patterns, inundation depth and duration, fertilizer/irrigation applied are recorded for each checking points in a particular mapping unit by interviewing farmers. Map is corrected by accommodating changed features. Physical and chemical data are processed and guide is prepared.
