Sixteen shallow tubewell water samples were collected from different villages of Mymensingh district of to evaluate the quality of water for drinking, irrigation and livestock consumption. The depth of the wells ranged from 25 to 69 meters. All the samples were alkaline in nature and within “highest desirable” to “maximum permissible” limit for drinking. Nine samples were unsuitable for long- term irrigation due to higher pH value. Electrical conductivity categorized almost all the samples as “good” for irrigation. While the TDS classified the samples “highest desirable” to maximum permissible limit for drinking and “fresh water” for irrigation and were suitable for drinking, irrigation and livestock consumption. The most serious hazards were observed by the contamination of Fe, Mn and Cu. All the waters were unsuitable for drinking and livestock consumption as a result of higher concentration of Mn than recommended limit. Considering Fe quantities 11 samples were unsuitable for drinking and livestock. Copper contents classified 11 samples unsuitable for irrigation .The values of Ca, Mg , Na, K, and Zn were within  safe limit for drinking, irrigation and livestock use. Boron, SAR and SSP levels were also safe for irrigation .Cl contents of one sample was beyond recommended limit for livestock. SAR and EC rated all the samples as “medium salinity” and “low alkalinity” (C2S1) class. About 31, 50, 13 and 6% of the samples were “soft”, “moderately hard”, “hard “  and “very hard” class for irrigation . A few numbers of samples were unsuitable for irrigation because of higher residual carbonate (RSC).

The chemical analysis were performed to assess the quality rating and suitability of ground water of the study area.

Sixteen water samples were collected from the shallow tubewells of different villages under Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. Samples were collected following methods outlined by APHA (2000) and Tandon (1995). The chemical analyses were performed in the department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.The pH, EC and TDS were determined following methods mentioned by Tandon (1995). CO3 and HCO3 were determined acidimetrically, Cl by argentometric titration and Ca and Mg were followed for the determination of Cl after Upadhyay and Sharma (2002). Ca and Mg were determined by complexometric method of titration Chopra and Kanwar (1986). Na and K were determined flame photometrically while Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn were determined with the help of AAS following method outlined by APHA (2000). Spectrophotometric method was followed for the determination of P and B (Page et al. 1982).Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and Hardness (HT) of samples were calculated following standard formula mentioned by Mishra and Ahmed (1993), Richards (1968) and Michael (1997). Statistical analysis were done following methods outlined by Gomez and Gomez (1984) with the help of computer package M-STAT.

From the results of chemical analysis of water samples and comparing the values with international recommended concentration for drinking, irrigation and livestock consumption it can be concluded that microelement pollution present in the groundwater sources of different villages of Mymensingh district in Bangladesh. Almost all the samples were unfit for drinking and livestock consumption due to higher Fe and Mn concentration .A good number of samples were questionable for irrigation due to higher pH,Cu and RSC values. Finally it is suggested that the chemical quality of ground water and degree of pollution must be checked to prevent any economic damage of human life, cultivated crops and livestock farming.
