Effect of Decomposition Period on Efficacy of Two Types of Oilcake to Control of Root-knot Nematode

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was under taken to determine effect of decomposition period of mustard and cotton seed oilcake, added to soil as organic amendment for control of root-knot nematode on eggplant in pot experiment. The oilcake were applied at the rate of 0, 0.5, 0.75 and 1% (w/w) and allowed to decompose for 10, 20 and 30 days before planting seedling (21 days old). Soil amended with either of the oilseed cakes had a lower root gall index and greater shoot height, shoot weight and root weight than the control treatment. At the highest rate, maximum reduction in root galling was achieved but at this rate plants suffer from phytotoxicity that caused a slight reduction in plant growth compare to the lower rate. Effectiveness of the oilcake to control root knot nematode and enhance plant growth increased with increasing decomposition period. Even at the highest rate no phytotoxicity appeared when the oilcake were allowed to decompose for 30 days before planting.

Objectives:

The present investigation was undertaken to find out the suitable period of decomposition of oilcake added to soil as organic amendment for control of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.)

Methodology:

Two independent pot experiments were conducted with mustard (Brassica campestris) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) seed oilcake to determine the decomposition period require reducing phytotoxicity during 1988-89, 11989-90 and 1990-91 cropping seasons. The oilcakes were applied to the soil at the rate of 0, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00% (w/w). They were allowed to decompose for 10, 20 and 30 days before planting. The soil was infested with M. incognita and inoculum level of 100 – 110 second stage juveniles/100 m soil was maintained each year. The pots were arranged on the benches of a glass house following completely randomized 3x3 factorial design. The pots were watered regularly to maintain enough moisture (65% field capacity) for decomposition. Each pot was planted with 21 days old seedling of eggplant (1 seedling/pot). The seedlings were allowed to grow for 60 days and then uprooted and washed in running tap water. The root system were evaluated for degree of galling on scale of 0 – 10. Shoot length, fresh weight of shoot and root were also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Addition of mustard seed oilcake resulted in significant reduction in gall index values with maximum reduction at the highest rate. Severity of root galling decreased and plant growth increased significantly with increasing application rate and decomposition period. Effect of application rate and decomposition period of cakes on root galling shoot height, shoot weight, root were significant but plant weight at 0.75 and 1.00% application rate at the shorted decomposition period were lower than the corresponding 0.50% rate suggesting phytotoxicity. The lowest rate (0.50%) of cotton seed oilcake decomposed for only 10 days was enough to achieve significant reduction in galling index. Severity of root galling decreased gradually with increasing rate of the oilcake with a maximum reduction at the highest rate. Efficacy of the cake in reducing root galling increased with increasing decomposition period. Under all decomposition periods significantly improved growth of shoot and root was achieved with all rates of the oilcake as compared to control treatment but reduced plant weight and shoot height at the 0.75% and 1.00% application rates compare to 0.50% rate were apparently due to phytotoxicity.
