Sixteen soybean entries were evaluated at Oilseed Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research (BARI) ,Gazipur, during 1996-97 and 1997-98 against stem flies infestation  and their incidence, Among the 16 entries of soybean evaluated against stem flies infestation  and their incidence only SK-1, 75-07-38-4 and MTD-459 were considered as resistance to stem flies  (5-6.78% infestation and 9.93-15.29% stem tunneling) and higher yielder (1.30-1.48 t/ha). Seven entries (AGS-129, BS-10, Q-40, PM-78-63-13, 300-50-2-17 and Ransom) were considered as moderately resistance (10-14.66% infestation and 15-25% stem tunneling)  and 5 entries (KSHB-2, CM -60, PR-164-120, 7521-26-1 and PK-416) were considered susceptible (15-22% infestation and 13-53% stem  tunneling) to stem flies which produced lower yield (0.96-1.28 t/ha) than the other entries. The  peak  infestation  (30-31.60%) of  all  the   entries  was observed in the last week of March, 1997 and 1998.

To evaluate the level of resistance to stem flies among the selected soybean lines and their incidence.

The experiment was conducted at the Oilseed  Research Centre , Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the Rabi seasons of 1996-97 and 1997-98. Sixteen soybean entries received from Thailand with one local cheek variety, Shohag (PB -1) were used in this study. The unit plot size 2m x 1.5m with a spacing of 30 x 5cm laid out in RCB design in  three  replication  was used. Seeds of all soybean entries were sown on 25th December each year in 1996 and 1997. Recommended agronomic practices were followed uniformly in raising the crop (Anon. 1998). Screening was done under natural infested condition. For evaluation of resistance to stem flies, 20 plants were randomly sampled per plot and then counted for  infested and healthy plants in all the entries. Then the percent infested plants were calculated.  This observation was made on 25 January (30 days after sowing =DAS) and continued up to 20 March ( maturity stage of the crop) at 10 days intervals. Recording the extent of stem of tunneling by the maggots and the total length of the 10 randomly selected infested stems of each replicated entries were done. The stem was split open with a find scalpel and the length of tunnel was measured with a scale . From these data percent of stem tunneled was calculated. Days to maturity and yield (t/ha) of all the soybean entries were also recorded. Statistical analysis of all replicated data was by calculating Analysis of variance, LSD (Least significant difference) and Co-efficient of variation (CV%) with the help of a computer following Gomez and Gomeze (1976)

The stem flies infestation was observed in the 1st  week of January at early vegetative stage (30 DAS) and continued on the last week of  March, in 1997 and 1998  at  the maturity stage (80-90  DAS ) of the crop in  both the years .The  peak  infestation  (30-31.60%) of  all  the   entries  was observed in the last week of March. Among the 16 entries of soybean evaluated against stem flies infestation  and their incidence only SK-1, 75-07-38-4 and MTD-459 were considered as resistance to stem flies  (5-6.78% infestation and 9.93-15.29% stem tunneling) and higher yielder (1.30-1.48 t/ha). Seven entries  namely, AGS-129, BS-10, Q-40, PM-78-63-13, 300-50-2-17 and Ransom were considered as moderately resistance (10-14.66% infestation and 15-25% stem tunneling)  and 5 entries (KSHB-2, CM -60, PR-164-120, 7521-26-1 and PK-416) were considered susceptible (15-22% infestation and 13-53% stem  tunneling) to stem flies which produced lower yield (0.96-1.28 t/ha) than the other entries.
