Management of Ant and Termite in Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three species of ants namely, Monomorium indicum Forel, Camponotus spp. and Dorylus orientalis Westwood (Formicidae: Hymenoptera) and four species of termites namely, Odontotermes obesus Rambur Odontotermes bruneus Holmgren, Microtermis thoracalis Wasmann and Microtermisobesus (Termitidae: Isoptera) were recorded in groundnut at different growth stages of the crop at Gazipur. The ant and termite infestation in groundnut started after sowing seeds in the soil and continued up to the maturity stage of the crop. Severe infestation occurred during December-January at the germinating and seedling stage of the crop. Treatments of seeds with kerosene oil at 5ml/kg of kernel just before sowing was found effective (about 29% seed can be saved and calculated in the highest benefit cost ratio (BCR 7.00) for the management of these pests.

Objectives:

To determine extent of damage and to find out the effective management technique against Ant and Termite

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field and laboratory of the Oilseed Research Centre, (ORC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, during Rabi seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09. The groundnut variety BARI Chinabadam-6 was used for this study. The experimental plots measured 4m X 3m. The seeds of groundnut were sown in the plot on the 1st week of December each year in 2007 and 2008. There were four replications and the plots were selected following Randomize Complete Block Design. The row and the plants were spaced 40 cm and 10 cm apart, respectively. The recommended agronomic practices for raising the crop were maintained. Fifty kernels were sown in each 3 m length area. Five treatments namely, T1-mixed with kerosene oil @ 5ml/kg of kernel, T2-mixed with sevin 80 wp 2 g/Kg, T3-neemoil 5ml/kg seed, T4- application of neem oilcake 250 kg/ha T5- spraying of Dursban 20EC @ 2ml/L and T6-untreated control were tested against ant and termite of groundnut under field condition. Before sowing seeds were counted and final plant population was also assessed at maturity of the crop. Percent plant damaged were recorded in each treatments. Ants and termite severe collected and brought to the laboratory and preserved for identification. Yield data were recorded. BCR of the treatments were also calculated for final conclusion.
