A Study on Profitability of Goat Production in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to determine the profitability of goat production under scavenging system of rearing in some selected areas of Bangladesh. For the purpose, 250 goal-raising farm households were selected for investigation. Results showed that, the number of goat per farm varied from 2.39 to 13.75 with an average of 5.06. In cost component, the imputed value of labour took the highest (60%) share. The variable costs accounted for about 33% of the total cost. The average annual gross Income and total rearing cost for all herd-size categories were Tk 2201.79 and Tk 1387.13, respectively. The calculated benefit-cost ratios (BCR) were 0.38, 1.82, 2.68 and 1.02 for herd-size group;s 1-3, 4-6, 7-10 and 11 and above, respectively. It indicated that goat raising was economically profitable for herd-size groups 4-6, 7-10 and 11 and above.

Objectives:

1. To investigate on the socio-economic characteristics of the goat rearing farmers

2. To determine profitability of goat production ,and

3. To identify constrains hindering the raising of goat in rural Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Five districts namely, Mymensingh, Dinajpur, Jessore, Comilla and Bogra districts were selected for this study. Survey was conducted on 250 goat rearing farm households taking 50 from each of the selected districts. Five village from each of the selected district were selected considering concentration of goat population. Goat were collected randomly from 10 goat raisers from each of the selected villages. The goat raising farms were grouped into four categories depending on herd-sizes: (1) herd-size : 1 to 3, (ii) herd-size : 4 to 6, (iii) herd-size 7 to 10 and (iv) herd-size : 11 and above goats. There were farms having herd-size 11 and above goats, 46 farms having herd-size of 7-10 goats. 130 farms having herd size of 4-6 goats and 66 farms having herd-size of 1-3 goats. Data for the year 2001 were collected using pre-designed questionnaire by a single visit. A second visit was made to some households for collecting missing information. The survey was conducted during January 2002 to April 2002. Variable cost, feed cost, veterinary cost, repairing of sheds, cost of ropes, breeding cost, miscellaneous cost, interest on variable costs, fixed cost, family labour cost, depreciation of goat sheds, depreciation of equipment, interest on fixed capital, sale of goats, sale of milk, sale skins, income from bulk, income from shared-out goats, net change in inventory, returns over variable costs, net returns, returns per labour and BCR were determined in this study.

Achievement/Findings:

The resource poor small, marginal and landless farmers reared about 85% of the total goat population. A goat raising household earned a profit of Tk. 2201.79 per annum from goat rearing which was about 5% of the household income. The BCR for all herd-size group was found 1.59, indicating that goat. rearing is economically viable in rural areas of Bangladesh. To make the enterprise more profitable, some facilities like credit, veterinary services, supply of quality bucks and impart training on efficient goal management practices need to be ensured. All these endeavors will help increasing goat production, generate income and employment facilities and thus alleviate poverty in rural areas of Bangladesh.
