This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur and BRRI R/S Rajshahi in T. Aman season. The object of this study was to develop and release of drought tolerant short duration and high yield potential rice variety for T. Aman season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line IR82635-B-B-75-2 as drought tolerant variety, BRRI dhan66 for T. Aman season in 2014. It has deep green leaf, long and wider flag leaf and golden colored medium slender grain with intermediate (23%) amylase content. Plant height of the variety is 118-120 cm with 110-115 days growth duration. Growth duration is 3-4 days longer than BRRI dhan56. Average yield is about 4.5 t/ha. It can give 1.0 t/ha more yield than BRRI dhan56 at drought prone environments of Bangladesh At 70-80 cm PWTD (Perch Water Table Depth) below the surface level and soil moisture content below 20%, BRRI dhan66 can give 4.0 t/ha grain yield. It is drought tolerant HYV at reproductive phase in rainfed lowland rice ecosystem.  As the growth duration of BRRI dhan66 is comparatively less than BRRI dhan33 and Binadhan-7, wheat, potato and early rabi crops in north and early Boro in South will be possible to cultivate after harvesting this variety.

To develop modern rice varieties for drought tolerance with emphasis on earliness, good grain quality and yield potential superior to standard varieties for T. Aman season.

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur and BRRI R/S Rajshahi in T. Aman season. This variety was developed through hybridization followed by pedigree selection method. It is introduced from IRRI, Philippines. It is IRRI developed line with pedigree IR82635-B-B-75-2 (IR78875-176-B-2/IR78875-207-B-3). After collecting the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Advanced Yield Trial (AYT) and Regional Yield Trials (RYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was carried out at eight locations viz. BRRI farm, Gazipur, Natore, Jhinaidah, Jpypurhat, Kushtia, Rajshahi, Chapai  Nawabgonj and Naogaon to evaluate of promising breeding line for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety. Finally the Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) was carried out at 11 drought prone T. Aman rice cultivated areas viz. Godagari, Tanore, Rajshahi; Gomostapur, Chapai Nobabgonj; Pursha, Niamotpur, Naogaon; Rangpur Sadar; Nilphamari Sadar; Lalmonirhat Sadar; Fulbari, Dinajpur; Kustia Sadar and BRRI farm, Gazipur using BRRI dhan56 as standard check for on-farm evaluation of proposed line by the NSB team for the recommendation of release as a new variety. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan56. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line IR82635-B-B-75-2 as variety.

The BRRI dhan66 is recommended as variety for drought tolerant HYV at reproductive phase for cultivation in rainfed low land rice ecosystem of Bangladesh.
