An Evaluation of Training Course of Female Block Supervisors, Role in Homestead Development

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present paper is an outcome of a study carried out with the participants of the training course, on "Female Block Supervisors' Role in Homestead Development. The study intends to evaluate the impact, usefulness and overall effectiveness of the course in order to improve such future progress. The findings revealed that the training course fulfilled its basic objectives and was efficiently managed. The topics included in the course were very much useful for the participants and the knowledge acquired through it vas significantly high. On the basis of this study, some recommendations were also made for improvement of organizational mechanisms and departmental planning for developing capability and professional career of the participants.

Objectives:

To understand the nature of home management extension work the female BSs are supposed to perform,
To measure the usefulness of the training course,
To measure the level of performance of the participants in the concerned programme, and
To get feedback from the trainees to enrich interaction and to review pertinent issues for future courses.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at GTI, BAU, Mymensingh from October 24 to 29, 1987 and October 31 to November 5, 1987. The respondents were all female Block Supervisors of DAE having an experience of 1 to 7 years services. Data were, collected through distributed questionnaire technique. While framing the questionnaire, subjects like the depth of knowledge of the participants in the concerned subject matter areas, their field experience, the administrative and technical problems and its possible solution were taken into consideration. However, in order to assess the level of knowledge, a pre-training evaluation was made through structured questionnaire and evaluation quizzes are followed by Islam (1988) and Ali et al. (1988). Similarly, to assess the performance of the participants, a post-training evaluation was also made following the similar procedure. However, to get feedback from the trainees, the questionnaire focused on different issues like suggestions regarding topics to be included in future programme, duration as preferred by majority of the participants, things of liking and disliking and suggestions for improving such programmes in future. Out of 67 participants, data were obtained from 65 participants. It was observed that certain common features existed in both the groups regarding the aforesaid issues. Opinions expressed by them concerning these issues have been presented under common heads. To illustrate the data, number and percentage distribution, rank order and t-statistics were used as and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Human resource development through training is a necessary pre-condition for any development programme. Women constitute half of our nation. Realizing the importance of extension work with-rural women, a beginning has been made in DAE by posting some female BSs in the rural areas. GTI along with DAE personnel designed a training course for a group of 67 female BSs in two batches. This paper has emerged from the overall experiences of those training events. The available data received from the participants and the feed-back information of the course revealed that the training was very much useful to most of the trainees.
