Study the Efficiency and Performance of Different Types of Labourers on Rice Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was undertaken at the BRRI Farm, Gazipur to evaluate the efficiency of different types of labourers (male and female) for different operations of rice cultivation in Boro season, 1999. The treatments were- a) Gender: (i) male labourers and (ii) female labourers; b) types of labourer: i) muster roll labourers of BRRI, (ii) contractor’s labourers of BRRI and (iii) contractual labourers (specific job is contracted to BRRI labourers). Working hours of labourers were from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm i.e., 8 hours which was considered in the study as one man-day. The result showed that the highest man-day (20.40 man-day/ha) was needed for transplanting by female x muster roll labourers followed by female x muster roll labourers followed by female x contractor’s labourers. Almost a similar trend was observed for winnowing and harvesting operations by contractor labourer. In case of first weeding, the highest number of labourers (25.60 man-day/ha) were used by female x muster roll labourers which was statistically identical with male x muster roll labourers and the lowest (22.68 man-day/ha) was due to male x contractual labourers. A similar trend of labour use was observed for second weeding and threshing operations. Bearing tillers per hill were also the highest in male muster roll labourer and the lowest in female contractual labourers. Grainspanicle^-1 was the highest (120.70) in male muster roll labourers and the lowest (117.50) in female contractual labourers. The sterile spikelet’s showed a reverse trend. Grain yield was the highest (5.65t/ha) in male x muster roll operated plots and the lowest was in the female contractual labourers. Almost a similar trend of influence was observed in case of straw yield.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficiency of different types of labourers (male and female) for different operations of rice cultivation in Boro season.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the BRRI farm, Gazipur during Boro season’ 1999 to determine the efficiency and performance of male and female labourers and their effect on growth and yield of rice. The treatments were- gender: (i) male labourers and (ii) female labourers; and types of labourer: i) muster roll labourers of BRRI, (ii) contractor’s labourers of BRRI and (iii) contractual labourers (specific job is contracted to BRRI labourers). Working hours of labourers were from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm i.e., 8 hours which was considered in the study as one man-day. The treatments were placed on the unit plot of 20m² area. Randomly selected two labourers for transplanting, weeding and harvesting of rice throughout the seasons. The data were collected according to the plan prepared for the respective treatments. The total time required to complete an operation by the respective supervisors were carefully recorded and converted into man-hours/ha. Job contact. The specified jobs were contracted to the selected group of BRRI labourers. They worked with their own responsibility according to the instructions of the investigator(s). The labourers were allowed to leave the scheduled working time whenever they could complete the job. Contractor's labour. The labourers were supplied and supervised by an enlisted contractor of BRRI. He managed to complete the specified jobs by his labourers up to a satisfied quality of works.

Achievement/Findings:

The male labourers needed shorter time for different operations of rice cultivation. On the other hand, muster roll operated treatments gave higher yield but, the performance of plant growth and yield were better in this group of labourers than other two types e.g., contractor's labourers and contractual labourers.
