Effect of Low Temperature on Rice Genotypes of Irton for Whole Growth Period at BRRI Rangpur During Boro

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Boro rice face low temperature stress at any stage of its growth in our country every year. To overcome this problem cold tolerant rice variety is to be developed. Therefore, a screening experiment was conducted to identify IRTON materials which can tolerate low temperature both at seedling stage and reproductive phase.Germination percentage of the entry from IRRI was very poor. Out of 28 genotypes 5 entries did not germinate. Growth duration of all the tested entries was significantly higher than BRRI dhan28 but closer to BRRI dhan36. Among the tested genotypes nine entries (HANAREUM, IR 05K106, IR10K152, IR 87322-65-2, IR 02K101, IRRI 142, JINMIBYEO, MILYANG 240 and GAYABYEO) were selected as moderately tolerant to cold with other good agronomic characteristics specially yield.

Objectives:

To identify suitable rice genotypes from IRTON materials which can tolerate low temperature both at seedling stage and reproductive phase.

Methodology:

Twenty eight genotypes (IRTON materials) from IRRI and two local cheek namely, BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 (moderately cold tolerant variety at seedling stage) were tested at BRRI Rangpur. The optimum time of seed sowing for cold screening in reproductive phase for Bangladesh is 15 October but we sow on 01 December due to delayed supply of seeds from IRRI. Fourty-five days old seedlings was transplanted in seven rows of five-meter length per entry using one seedling per hill, 20 cm x 20 cm spacing and augmented design. Urea, TSP, MOP and Zypsum were applied @ 325-105-130-70 kg/ha. All the fertilizers except urea were applied final land preparation and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 15, 30 and 45/ 50(before PI) DAT. Other cultural operations were applied as and when necessary. All the scorings were made based on Standard Evaluation System for Rice, IRRI, 1980. Vegetative vigor (Vg) and tillering ability were done at seedling stage and other parameters except heading (Hdg) were measured at maturity stage.

The IRTON rice genotype IR87322-65-2 was selected for the best performance in relation to cold tolerance, yield and other agronomic performance.
