An experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur to quantify the amount of water needed for  Boro rice cultivation by practicing alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and to determine N use efficiency by practicing alternate wetting and drying. Fertilizer treatment was Prilled urea and USG.The highest grain yield (6.23 t/ha) was recorded from AWD method (irrigation 5-7 cm when water is 15 cm below soil surface). Similarly highest mean yield (6.59 t/ha) and mean nutrient uptake (117 kg/ha) were recorded from water-fertilizer interaction of same AWD method (irrigation 5-7 cm when water is 15 cm below soil surface) along with USG. Grain yield and yield attributes were not statistically significant difference by effect of irrigation treatment except plant height. Maximum and minimum grain yield was recorded in treatment I1 (6.23 t/ha) and treatment I2 (5.87 t/ha). Grain yield, plant height and panicle/m2 were statistically significant difference by effect of fertilizer treatments USG and prilled urea. Yield and yield contributing character of Boro rice were not statistically significant difference by interaction effect of irrigation and fertilizer. The highest filled grain/panicle (133) recorded from irrigation (5-7 cm) after 3 days of disappearing of standing water with USG (I3F2). The lowest filled grain per panicle (95) recorded from irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 15 cm below soil surface and prilled urea (I1F1). The highest sterility (23%) was recorded from saturation plot with USG (I4F2).The lowest sterility (3.6%) was recorded from irrigation (5-7 cm)  when water is 30 cm below soil surface and prilled urea (I2F1 ).Maximum and minimum mean nutrient uptake were recorded 115.0 kg/ha and 99.0 kg/ha in treatment I2 (irrigation 5-7 cm when water is 15 cm below soil surface) and I3 (irrigation 5-7 cm after 3 days of disappearing of standing), respectively. Nutrient uptake attributes was influenced by effect of fertilizer treatment in USG and prilled urea.

  Water management
  1. To quantify the amount of water needed for  Boro rice cultivation by practicing alternate wetting and drying (AWD);
  2. To determine N use efficiency by practicing alternate wetting and drying;
  3. To determine the productivity and profitability of AWD for Boro crop; and
  4. To develop easy tool for irrigation scheduling in Boro season.

The field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur, during 2008-09. The treatment comprised four levels of irrigation and two levels of fertilizer (i) Prilled Urea (F1) and (ii) USG (F2) in split plot design with the level of irrigation in main plot and two levels of fertilizer in sub plot, replicated three times. The experiment was conducted in Boro season with the following treatments:I1 = Irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 15 cm below soil surface,I2 = Irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 30 cm below soil surface,I3 = Irrigation (5-7cm) after 3 days of disappearing standing water and I4 = Saturation (Control). Recommended doses of fertilizers were applied as per the crops. A fertilizer dose of 260 + 100 + 110 +56 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum was used for Boro crop. USG of 100 kg N/ha was used for Boro crop. Plot size was 4mx5m. Perforated PVC pipe of 6 inch diameter was installed in experimental plots (Treatment I1 and I2 plot). BRRI dhan28 was the chosen variety. Transplanting and harvesting date of BRRI dhan28 were 05.01.08 and 04.05.08, respectively. Seedling age was 45 days. Irrigation water was measured by V- notch. Evaporation data was collected from nearby installed Evaporation pan. Rainfall data measured by True-check rain gauge. Seepage and Percolation losses was measured with vertical gauge which installed in the experiment plot. Yield and yield component data was collected.
