An experiment was conducted at the farmers' fields of Pubail upzila in Gazipur district in the Boro season (2004-05) in lowland ecosystem to evaluate the performances of BRRI dhan29 under direct wet seeding with nitrogen ( N) management options. Sprouted seeds were sown in lines 20 cm apart and broadcast onto saturated soil under zero tillage by drum seeder. The standard transplanting method with BRRI recommended N application in three splits at 15, 45 and 55 days after seeding (DAS) was used as control. In case of N application, three splits (at 20, 40 and 80 DAS), four splits (at 20, 40, 60 and 85 DAS) and leaf colour chart (LCC)-based N application were investigated. Seeding technique had complete factorial combination with N management options. The total seven treatment combinations were laid out in a fractional factorial randomized complete block design. Direct wet seeding in lines gave the highest tiller, panicles, number of grains, grain yield, gross margin and incurred less variable cost compared to broadcasting zero tilled wet soil and transplanting. Application of N at 20, 40, 60 and 85 DAS gave the higher tiller, panicles, grains m-2, grain and straw yield and gross margin followed by LCC- based nitrogen application. So line sowing zero tilled wet soil method with four splits N/LCC-based N application might be the best management package to increase the production of Bora rice in the lowland ecosystem.

To find out the optimum time of N application of Boro rice in Boro-Fallow-Fallow cropping pattern in the lowland ecosystem.

The experiment was conducted at the farmers' fields, Pubail, Gazipur in the Boro season (2004-05) in lowland ecosystem. The crop was established by the line sowing zero tilled and broadcasting zero tilled wet soil methods as factor A along with transplanting method with BRRI recommended three times of N application at 15,45 and 55 DAT as control and three times of N application methods viz; three splits at 20, 40 and 85 DAS, four splits at 20, 40, 60 and 85 DAS and LCC-based N application methods as factor B were investigated. Factor A had complete factorial combination with factor B. So the total treatment combination was seven which was laid out in a fractional factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of the unit plot was 5- x 5-m. The seeds of BRRI dhan29 was sown in direct seeding zero tilled method. just after the recession of floodwater the land was leveled by laddering before two days of sowing. The sprouted seeds were sown in lines by drum seeder and broadcast by hand. On the same day the sprouted seeds were sown in seedbed for raising seedling for transplanting method. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted spaced at 20- x 20-cm using 2-3 seedlings and 30 kg ha-1 seed were used. Forty kg ha-1 seed were used for line sowing and broadcasting method. Fertilizers, N, P, K, Sand Zn were applied @ 120, 15,40, 10 and 2 kg ha-1, respectively. The sources of N, P, K, Sand Zn were urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and zinc sulphate (ZnS04), respectively. Triple super phosphate, MP, gypsum and ZnS04 were applied at the time of final land preparation as basal and N was top dressed as per treatment. The date of sowing and transplanting were 26 Nov 2004 and 28 Dec 2004, respectively. The spacing "18 cm x continuous" was used in lines by Drum seeder and 20- x 20-cm spacing was used for transplanting. Six day after sowing, the land was irrigated with water about two inches depth and Ronstar was applied at the rate of 1 lit. ha-1 to control weed. In case of LCC, .18 kg N ha-1 in four splits was applied. The data on tillers, weed density and weed dry biomass, plant height. growth duration. panicles. grains m-2. grain yield, straw yield, cost of land preparation, labour, inputs, irrigation, and price of the products and byproducts were collected following standard procedures.

Rice grown in line sown in zero tilled wet soil method with four splits of N application produced the highest grain yield which is economically profitable.
