The study has been initiated during 2005 T. Aman season in 15 farmers' plots, 5 plots in Hauli, 6 plots in Hatikata and 4 plots in Jolibila blocks of Chuadanga district to validate the potentiality of drum seeder in wet seeding. In each farmer’s field wet seeding rice by drum seeder plus N management by LCC (WS+LCC) and transplanting plus N management by LCC (TP+LCC) were compared with farmers’ transplanting (TP). Results showed that the WS+LCC and TP+LCC gave higher grain yields than TP at all the three locations. At Hauli and Hatikata the highest grain yield was recorded under WS+LCC and at Jolibila the highest yield was produced under TP+ LCC. The average increases in yield by WS+LCC and TP+LCC over TP for all the farmers in three locations were 0.50 t/ha (11 %) and 1.00 t/ha (25 %), respectively. Seed and crop establishment (sowing/transplanting) costs were higher in TP than WS by drum seeder at all the locations. In contrary, the weed management and irrigation costs were much higher in WS by drum seeder than TP at Jolibila and Hatikata but it was slightly lower at Hauli. At Jolibila the overall crop performance was poor due to drought, which elevated the cost. On an average nearly 5 % total cost was increased by WS using drum seeder over TP with a wide range from – 22.3 to 35.9 % at different locations. The WS by drum seeder was profitable only at Hauli site and it was reverse at other sites.

To validate the potentiality of drum seeder in wet seeding

Rice is traditionally transplanted in Bangladesh. Non-availability of farm laborers during peak period of transplanting is a critical problem. Direct wet seeding of sprouted seeds onto puddled soils is an alternative to traditional transplanting method. Introduction of drum seeder facilitates the wet seeding in line and may minimize the labor use during peak period of transplanting. During recent past the Government of Bangladesh has imported "Drum Seeder" from Vietnam. Efforts have been taken to produce drum seeder locally. There has been growing demand of validity the potential of drum seeder in wet seeding. Therefore, this activity has been initiated during 2005 T. Aman season in 15 farmers' plots, 5 plots in Hauli, 6 plots in Hatikata and 4 plots in Jolibila blocks of Chuadanga district. In each farmer’s field wet seeding rice by drum seeder plus N management by LCC (WS+LCC) and transplanting plus N management by LCC (TP+LCC) were compared with farmers’ transplanting (TP). The seed rates of the tested variety, BR11 were 37.5, 60 and 60 kg/ha, for WS+LCC, TP+LCC and TP treatments, respectively. The dates of seeding were 03-23 July, 12-22 June and 12-22 June for WS+LCC, TP+LCC and TP treatments, respectively. The dates of transplanting were 10-28 July and 10-28 July for TP+LCC and TP treatments, respectively. The fertilizer rates for WS+LCC, TP+LCC and TP treatments were 120-17-33-12-3, 120-17-33-12-3 and 167-17-33-12-3 kg/ha as urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. the date oh harvesting was 18-27 November, 10-20 November and 10-20 November, respectively.
