Labour Requirement and Benefits of Rice Cultivation Due to Weeding Methods and Spacing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute farm, Gazipur during Aus season, 2004 to find out the labour requirement and benefits of rice cultivation due to different spacing and methods of weed control. Three different spacing as 25 cm x 25 cm, 20 cm x 20 cm and 20 cm x15 cm and 3 weed control methods namely herbicide Rifit (Pretilachlor), hand weeding and rice weeder were tested. Labour requirement and benefits of rice cultivation as sell as rice yield were significantly affected by spacing and weeding methods. The 20 cm x15 cm spacing gave the highest grain yield (4.30 t ha^-1). Similarly, the highest grain yield was obtained when weeding was controlled by rice weeder. The highest grain yield in both the cases was due to higher number of grains m^-2. Irrespective of spacing, labour requirement was found significantly lower when weeding was done by herbicide (10.4 man-day ha^-1) compared to 600 and 200 percent higher labour required for hand weeding (61.2 man-day ha^-1) and rice weeder (20.0 man-day ha^-1), respectively. Accordingly, cost requirement for weeding was about 700, 250 percent higher in hand weeding and rice weeder, respectively over herbicide. So, farmer can save around Tk. 4000 and 1000 for weeding purpose to cultivate one ha of land by using herbicide instead of hand weeding and rice weeder, respectively. Herbicide control of weed is economic but quality weeding was found in hand weeding.

Objectives:

To find out the labour requirement and benefits of rice cultivation due to different spacing and methods of weed control.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at the BRRI farm with BR26 during Aus season of 2004. Three spacing viz. 25 cm x 25 cm, 20 cm x 20 cm, 20 cm x 15 cm and 3 weeding methods viz. weeding by herbicide rifit (Pretilachlor), hand weeding and rice weeder were tested. Among the weeding methods, rifit was applied @ 134 ml/bigha at 3 DAT up to 6 DAT as a recommended dose. Hand weeding and weeding by rice weeder was done at 20 DAT and 40 DAT. Thirty-days old seedlings were transplanted using studied spacing and 2-3 seedlings per hill. The unit plot size was 15 m x 15 m. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. All the fertilizers except urea applied as basal dose during final land preparation @ 220, 80, 120, 60 and 10 kg urea, tripple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively . Urea was applied in 3 equal splits at final land preparation, 15 and 30 DAT (BRRI, 2004). Other cultural operations except weeding were done as and when necessary. Labour requirement was estimated for each plot area and individual treatment and then adjusted into man-day ha. Accordingly, the cost regarding the labour of individual treatment was estimated. Also the percent increase of labour and cost of hand weeding and rice weeder over herbicide inspective of different spacing was calculated. Three hills from each plot were collected for calculating yield components. Grain yield was recorded on whole plot basis, adjusted it at 14% moisture level and converted into ton ha. Collected data were analyzed by analysis of variance using IRRISTAT method and the means were separated using DMRT/LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Our study suggests that herbicide rifit (Pretilachlor) was the most consistently profitable than either hand weeding or the rice weeded for controlling weed, especially for the sake of labour requirement and money. Care should be taken during the application of this chemical. This type of herbicidal control of weed is more suitable for the developing countries to reduce the production cost as well as the other countries of the earth surface.
