Morphological Characters and Nutritive Value of Selected Ber Cultivars of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur during November 1997 to March 1998 to evaluate fruit morphology and nutritive value of eleven cultivars of ber. Among the cultivars, Dhaka 90 produced the largest fruits (46.0 g each) having the highest vitamin C content. The fruit weight of the other cultivars varied from 10.5 to 18.1g. Fruits of Local 2 and Local 1 contained higher amount of organic acids (1.40 and 1.01 %) and sugar (11.36 and 10.87 %) than the other cultivars. The cultivar Apeli had the highest acceptability score through organoleptic test while Bombai was the lowest.

Objectives:

To study morphological characters and nutritive value of fruits of selected ber cultivars of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The investigation was carried out at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during the fruiting season from November 1997 to March 1998. Seven ber cultivars - Apeli or Karancha, Bilati, Narikeli, Bombai, Comilla or Ball boroi, and Dhaka 90 and four unnamed genotypes were selected for the study. The names of the cultivars are given : Apeli, Bilati, Narikeli, Jahaji, Bombai, Comilla, Dhaka 90, Local 1, Local 2, Local 3 and Local 4. The genotype Local 1, Local 2, Local 3 and Local 4 were seedling plants, while the rest were budded plants. There plants of similar age from each cultivar were selected for this experiment. Uniformly matured 50 fruits from each plant were collected and finally 10-20 fruits were selected for taking data on weight and size of fruits, weight of stone, edible portion, fruit shape, fruit surface, skin colour and flesh colour. Fruit maturity was determined by observing the full size of fruits and change of colour from green to yellow. For determining the nutritive value, composite samples were prepared from uniformly matured 10 fruits from each plant of each cultivar and samples were homogenised with distilled water. The homogenized samples were centrifuged and filtered to remove solid materials. The filtrate was used for estimation of ascorbic acid, organic acid and sugar. Three samples were independently studied for each parameter. Ascorbic acid, organic acid and sugar were estimated as per the procedures described by Pleshkov (1976), Shiraishi (1980) and Somogyi (1952), respectively. The data were analysed statistically following CRD with three replications. Organoleptic tests were carried out by a panel of judges on color, flavour, taste, texture and sweetness of the fruits.
