Nutrient and Heavy Metal Contents in Poultry Litter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two studies were conducted at the Soil Science Laboratory, BRRI, Gazipur in 1007 to determine the available plant nutrients and heavy metals from fresh to 120 days decomposed poultry liner collected from the layers poultry of Chandana farm, Gazipur. The heavy metals and trace elements in poultry feeds and poultry litters collected from different layer types of poultry farm at Gazipur were also determined. Fresh poultry litter contained the highest amount of different elements. Poultry feeds and poultry litters of different poultry farms varied widely in metallic elements. Elements content in poultry litter reduced gradually with increased decomposition period. The heavy metal content in the test poultry litter was below the proposed maximum allowable standard in Bangladesh. Therefore, poultry litter may be used judicially as a safe organic fertilizer for sustainable rice production.

Objectives:

To determine the contents of heavy metals, trace elements and available macronutrients in poultry litter and poultry feed in Bangladesh context.

Methodology:

The poultry litter was collected from the selected poultry farm at Chandana, Gazipur district at every 30 days intervals from 1-120 days and allowed for natural decomposition in the earthen pits under shade condition. Poultry Iitter samples were taken from each pit. Around 500g sample wax taken from different depth of each pit and replicated three times. The composite samples were air-dried and ground and sub-samples were taken for chemical analysis of nutrients, heavy metals and trace elements at the Soil Science Laboratory, BRRL Gazipur in 2007. Fresh poultry litter and poultry feeds were collected from five different layer type poultry farms at Gazipur district. Poultry litter and poultry feed samples were also air-dried and ground and sub- samples were taken for chemical analysis of heavy metals and trace elements at the same laboratory in 2007. The sub-samples were replicated three times for chemical analysis. For the analysis of nutrient content (P, K, S, Ca and Mg) in poultry litter, 0.2 g oven dry sub-samples were digested hy 6 ml di-acid (HNO₃: HCIO₄ = 2: I) mixture. For the determination of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, As and Ni) and trace elements (Zn, Cu and Mn ) in Poultry feeds and poultry litter, 0.5g oven dry sub samples were taken and soaked overnight with 5ml HNO₃. Then the samples were heated at 80-90°C until the red fume expelled. Samples were cooled down, then each sample was digested by 2ml HCIO₄and I ml H₂SO₄ and heated at 160-180°C temperature until a colorless solution with white effervescence was obtained following the standard methods for soil analysis, 1994. The digested samples were transferred to a 25ml volumetric flask and diluted with distilled water up to the mark and filtered through an acid washed filter paper. The sample extracts, were preserved in a plastic container for chemical analysis. Total N was analyzed by micro-Kjeldhal method using Foss Tecator-2300. The P and S contents in extract were determined colorimetrically and K. Ca and Mg by Atomic Absorption Spectrophometer. Heavy metals and trace elements were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission of Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Arsenic (As) was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophometer (AAS) equipped with a hydride generation system (HG-AAS).
