The main focus of this study was to determine the impact of gur processing activities from golpata by computing change in income, food consumption and housing environment of the beneficiaries compared with non-beneficiaries. The study was conducted in Kalapara Upazila under Patuakhali District. Sixty beneficiaries (i.e. who process gur from golpata) and the same number of non-beneficiaries (who do not process gur from golpata) belonging to nearly same status in respect of occupation education and farm size were selected randomly from (60+60=120) the farmers of three unions of Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali District. The findings indicated that the income, food consumption and housing environment of the beneficiaries increased significantly. The average yearly income of the beneficiaries increased to Tk. 63 thousand from Tk. 57.29 thousand. Similarly, the average per capita per day calorie intake increased to K.cal. 2389.23 from K.cal. 2148.77 and the average housing environment score of the beneficiaries was 13.72 compared to non-beneficiaries of 10.74. The education, annual income, cosmopolitness, extension contact, and beneficiaries’ knowledge level had positive significant relationship with their change in income. Education time spent in income generating activities, cosmopoliteness, extension contact and beneficiaries’ knowledge had positive significant relationship with their change in food consumption. Education, annual income, extension contact and beneficiaries’ knowledge level had significant positive relationship with their change in housing environment. ‘Gur production from golpata is more laborious’ was identified by the beneficiaries as the ranked one problem.

1. To assess the impact of gur processing from ‘golpata’ plants on the livelihood of the selected farmers. These farmers included marginalized communities of south western coastal districts of Bangladesh, 2. To explore the relationship of impact of gur processing activities with some selected characteristics like age, education, family size, farm size and annual income of the beneficiaries, and 3. To identify the problems faced by the farmers in gur production from golpata.

It has been mentioned earlier that there is no baseline information about the beneficiaries regarding gur processing activities from golpata, To assess the impact of those activities, a comparison have been made between beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries. All the beneficiaries of gur processing activity from golpata of Kalapara upazila were the population of the study. To assess the impact of gur processing activities, same number of non-beneficiary farmers belonging to nearly same background (with respect to education, farm size and occupation) were selected and studied. Thus the total number of respondent of the study became 60 × 2 = 120. Data were collected from all the beneficiaries (who process gur from golpata) and non-beneficiaries (who do not process gur) of Kalapara upazila by using a specially designed interview schedule prepared by the researchers themselves. Before going to the respondents for interview they were informed earlier, so that they could be available on their respective residences. The independent variables of the study were , age, education, family size, farm size, annual income, time spent in income generating activities, beneficiaries’ knowledge, extension media contact, cosmopoliteness and the dependent variable was the impact of gur processing activities, the dependent variable was measured by three dimensions like change in income, change in food consumption and change in housing environment. The data collected from the beneficiaries were coded, tabulated and analysed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Descriptive statistical procedures like frequency counts, percentage, mean, standard deviation etc, were employed to analyze the observed data. All the collected data were checked and cross checked before transferring to a master sheet to facilitate tabulation categorization according to the objectives of the study. Later the data were entered into computer for analysis by using SPSS in MS Word 98 program.
