Influence of Sucrose and Silver Nitrate on the Vase Life of Gypsophilla (gypsophilla Sp.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A lab experiment was conducted with four levels of sucrose (0, 2, 4 and 6%) and four levels of silver nitrate (0, 10, 20 and 30 ppm) at the Department of Horticulture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) during February 2008 to standardize the concentrations of vase solution of gypsophilla for their proper growth, yield and vase life. The effects of treatments varied significantly for most of the characters studied. The percentage of opened flower increased with increasing the concentration of sucrose. The maximum weight increase of flower stalk was found at 6% sucrose solution while it was reduced with increased concentration of silver nitrate. Hundred percent opened flower was observed in S₂SN0, S₄SN₁₀, S₄SN20, S₄SN₃₀_, S₆SN₀, S₆SN₁₀, S₆SN₂₀ and S₆SN₃₀. The maximum weight increase of flower stalk through water uptake was found in S₆SN₀ at 6 and 9 days of vase life. The longest vase life (14 days) was observed in 4% sucrose with 20 ppm silver nitrate followed by same level of sucrose with 10 ppm and 30 ppm of silver nitrate.

Objectives:

1. To find out appropriate concentration of sucrose and silver nitrate for increasing the vase life of Gypsophilla.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, 11 to 29 February, 2008 to study the post harvest behavior of Gypsophilla flower under different concentration of sucrose along with Silver nitrate. Two hundred twenty eight grams of sucrose and 1.5 g of silver nitrate, 96 conical flasks (100 ml) and required water taken for the preparation of vase solution. Each conical flask was filled up to 60 ml in volume with the solution containing sucrose and silver nitrate as per treatment. The conical flasks were arranged after tagging chronologically from 1-16. The examined flasks were arranged into 6 rows and the flasks were sealed with aluminum foil to check water evaporation loss. Two factor experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were sixteen treatments in the experiment comprising four levels of sucrose (0, 46, 92, and 138 kg/ha) and of silver nitrate (0, 36, 72 and 144 kg P₂O₅/ha) concentrations. The flower stalks were harvested when the lower most floret seemed to be whitish color. The harvested stalks were carried and gathered to the horticulture laboratory. The stalks were cut with uniform length of 35 cm. After recording the fresh weight, two stalks were kept in each conical flask and data on Fresh weight of stalk, Percentage of weight increase of stalk, fully opened flowers (%), Duration of vase life the recorded data were statistically analyzed through partitioning the total variance with help of computer “MSTAT” programme. The difference between treatments means were compared by Least Significant.
