A pot ex periment was conducted at the net- house of department of Agricultural Chemistry, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during boro season (December 2012 to June2013) to observe the effect of different levels of salinity stress on the morphological characters of two rice varieties, BINA dhan10 and BRRI dhan47. The varieties were treated with five concentrations of NaCl, viz., 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 dSm-1. Result indicated that plant height, number of effective tiller hill-1, number of non effective tiller hill-1, number of field grain panicle-1, number of unfilled grain panicle-1, panicle length and grain yield hill-1 were influenced at different levels of salinity. The number of effective tiller hill-1, panicle length, number of filled grain panicle-1 and grain yield hill-1 were significantly decreased with the increased levels of salinity. It was found that the K content in shoot was decreased with the increased levels of salinity. The highest K content (1.77 %) in shoot was found in BINAdhan-10 at 0 dSm-1. The highest Na content (1.69 %) in shoot was found in BRRI dhan47 at 12 dSm-1. Between these two varieties BINA dhan10 show ed better performance at salinity stress up to a certain level ex cept plant height.

1. The purpose of the present investigation is to provide information on growth parameters of BINAdhan-10 and BRRI dhan47, yield and yield contributing characters of two rice cultivars and finally, nutrient contents of two rice cultivars under different saline condition.

The experiment was conducted at the net-house and laboratory of agricultural chemistry department, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during boro season (December 2012 to June 2013). Earthen pots were used in this experiment. The size of the pot was 30 × 20 cm. The soil was non-calcarious red brown terrace with loamy texture belonging to the AEZ (Madhupur Tract). Decomposed cowdung was mixed with the soil. Chemical fertilizers namely urea, triple supper phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of Potash (MoP) were used for N, P and K at the rate of 120, 100 and 75 kg/ha respectively before final preparation of the seed bed. There were 2 different rice varieties used in the experiment – BINA dhan10, BRRI dhan47 which were collected from Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). Seeds and rice plant were subjected to exposure in different salinity concentration of 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16 dSm-1 NaCl. The experiment was carried out in a Complete Block Design (CBD) having two factors with three replications. The different salinity levels were obtained by dissolving commercial salt (NaCl) at the rate of 640 mg per liter distilled water for 1 dSm-1 salinity level. The control i.e. 0 was maintained using distilled water only. Prior to germination seeds were surface sterilized with 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. The glass vials containing distilled water for seed rinsing was sterilized for 20 minutes. Sterilized seeds were imbibed in distilled water for 24 hours and then washed thoroughly in fresh water, and the seeds were incubated for sprouting. After sprouting, they were placed in the pots. The pots containing soil were moistened with water. Five weeks old seedlings of selected rice cultivars were transplanted in the respective pots. There were two hills in each pot. Two weeks after transplanting the salt solutions were applied in each pot according to the treatments. To avoid osmotic shock, salt solutions were added in three equal installments on alternate days until the expected conductivity was reached. The electric conductivity (EC) of each pot was measured everyday with a EC meter and necessary adjustments were made by adding water. The remaining 2/3rd urea were top dressed at two equal divisions after 25 and 50 days of transplanting. After providing an exposure of salinity treatment for a period of one and two week’s plant height should be counted. Total number of tiller /hill was counted at maturity stages. At the final harvest, the data on yield components like number of effective tillers/hill, number of non effective tillers/hill, panicle length (cm), filled grains/panicle, unfilled grains/panicle, and grain yield /hill were recorded. Rice plant samples were analyzed to determine the amount of Na and K content therein. All elemental analyses were conducted on acid digested material through micro-Kjeldahl digestion system. The content of Na was measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) method of titration according to the methods. Data were analyzed following Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) technique and mean differences were adjusted by the multiple comparison test using the statistical computer based programmers MSTAT-C v.2.1. Means were compared by using DMRT test.

The cultivar BINAdhan-10 had a better expression of morphological characters than those of BRRI dhan47 in all cases except plant height. Na+ content increase with the increases in salinity level but decreased K+ content in different plant tissues of the cultivars. Generally the tolerant cultivar showed lower Na+ concentration reflecting the dilution effect, the tolerance mechanism. Based on the above conclusions plant breeder may adapt the technique of selection or screening the genotypes and develop salt tolerant rice cultivars.
