A field experiment was conducted at the Hort iculture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November, 2005 to January, 2006 in order to study the effects of height of bed on growth and yield of five radish variet ies. There were three heights of bed, 0 cm (flat ), 8 cm and 16 cm and five radish varieties: Tasaki San, Pinky, Druty, Red Bomby and Early 40. The heights of bed were always maintained from sowing to harvest . Results showed that plant height, number of leaves per plant at harvest, length of leaf, width of leaf, root length at harvest, weight of root per plant, consumers’ preference, marketable yield of root per plot and per hectare increased significantly with the increase in bed height . The highest marketable yield of roots (42.65 t/ha) was produced by the 16 cm bed height . Similarly, variety had a significant influence on the yield components of radish varieties. The highest marketable yield was found from the variety Early 40 (53.99 t/ha). Considering the combined effect, it was found that there was significant variation among the treatment combinations in most of the yield components and yield of radish. The highest marketable yield (65.68 t/ha) was obtained when the variety Early 40 variety was grown in 16 cm high bed. The second highest marketable yield (54.94 t/ha) was achieved from Early 40 grown in 8 cm high bed.

1. The present study has been undertaken to study the yield and quality of five radish varieties as influenced by different height of bed.

The present research work on the effects of height of bed on growth and yield of radish varieties was carried out at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh located at 240N latitude and 910E longitude having an altitude of 3.8m during the period from November 2005 to January 2006. There were five varieties of radish namely V1= Tasaki San Mula (BARI Mula-1), V2=Pinky (BARI Mula-2), V3=Druty (BARI Mula-3), V4=Red Bomby, V5=Early 40 and there were 3 levels of height of bed H1=0 cm (flat), H2=8 cm, H3=16 cm used in this experiment. The experiment was laid out in the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Seeds of Tasaki San Mula, Pinky, Druty were obtained from the Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. There was another two other varieties, named, Red Bomby and Early 40 for the experiment were collected from local market, Mymensingh. Manure and fertilizer - The doses of manure and fertilizers applied to the soil were as follows as recommended in the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Well-decomposed cowdung manure (1.0 tha-1) was applied to the experimental plot and incorporated to the soil during the preparation of land. Triple superphosphate (250 kg ha-1) was applied as a basal dose, and the entire amount was applied during preparation of final land. The total amount of urea (300 ka ha-1) and MOP (235 kg ha-1) fertilizers were top dressed in two equal splits as side dressing after 35 and 50 days of seed sowing. Sowing of seeds - Seeds were used at the rate of 2.5 kg/ha. The seeds were directly sown in the field in line sowing method on 27 November, 2005. There were four rows per plot at spacing of 45 cm. The rows were marked out, and three seeds were sown at each sowing position at a distance of 30 cm in the row. The seeds were then thinly covered with fine soil. Intercultural operations - Thinning, weeding, irrigation, earthing up soil and plant protection measure was accomplished as and when necessary to keep the crop healthy. Collection of data - Height of plant, No. of leaves per plant, Size of the largest leaf, Length of the largest leaf, Width of the largest leaf, Length of root, Diameter of root, Weight of root, Weight of radish leaves per plant, Days from sowing to harvest, Days from sowing to first flowering, % plants flowering, % plants having pithy root, % plants having branched root, Smoothness of skin, Yield of root. Consumer preference - Consumers’ performance for the harvested roots was estimated by a panel of 25 judges in a 0-9 scale. The judges scored the roots harvested from each plot considering their preference in respect of shape, size, colour and smoothness of skin and branching of roots. The average of the scores given by the judges was calculated. Statistical analysis - The collected data on various parameters under study were statistically analyzed. The mean for all the treatments were calculated and analyses of variance for all the characters were performed by F-variance test. The significance of difference among the pairs of treatment means was evaluated by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5% levels of probability.

There were significant variation among the different considerations on the number and size of leaves, plant height, length and diameter of root, weight of root, yield of root per plot and per hectare and on the quality of roots. In general, the varieties Early 40, Pinky and Tasaki san performed both when grown either in 8 cm or 16 cm high bed. Considering all the parameters studied, production of radish for roots in 8 cm or 16 cm high bed appeared best under the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm conditions.
