Soil Salinity Management on Yield Performance of Sweet Gourd (pumpkin)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out in Salinity Management and Research Center, Soil Resource Development Inst itute, Bat iaghata, Khulna during kharif-1 season of 2012 to investigate the effect of mulching (rice st raw) at bottom layer and top of soil surface on soil salinity and yield of sweet gourd. The ex perimental t reatment includes four t reatment s as cont rol (no mulch), mulch at bottom of plough layer of heap, mulch at top of soil surface of heap and mulch bot tom and top of soil surface of heap. Soil salinity was recorded at 15 days interval. Highest soil salinity was found after 72 DATS of sowing and at that t ime; the highest salinity (8.7 dS/m) was recorded at no mulch heap and low est (6.1 dS/m) salinity was found at mulch bottom and top of soil surface of heap. Yield and different yield contribut ing characters such as aux iliary branches per plant, flowers per plant and fruit s per plant were recorded regularly. Highest aux iliary branches per plant (2.93), flowers per plant (8.12), fruits per plant (2.67) and average fruit weight (2.52) were found from the heap of mulching at both top and bot tom layer of heap. Also significant ly higher yield (18.23 ton/ha) w as found from the heap of mulching at both top and bottom layer of heap. Thus present result revealed that, two layer mulching (both at top and bot tom of heap) decreased salinity and also increased yield of sweet gourd in saline soil.

Objectives:

1. To find out the effect of mulching (rice straw) at bottom layer and top of soil surface on soil salinity and yield of sweet gourd.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Salinity Management and Research Center, Soil Resource Development Institute, Khulna during Kharif-1 season of 2012. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 6 m. The seed was sown on 6 March, 2012. The treatments were using straw mulch at different places of heap to control soil salinity. Mulch at bottom of plough layer of heap, mulch at top of soil surface of heap and mulch bottom and top of soil surface of heap and control were used as treatments. The soil was silty clay. The heap was fertilized with cow dung, Urea, TSP, MoP Gypsum as per soil test value. The entire quantity of cow dung, TSP, MP, gypsum and half of urea were applied as basal dose during heap preparation. 50% of Urea was applied 15 days of seed sowing and rest was applied 30 days of seed sowing. Fungicide, insecticide application and other intercultural operations were done when it necessary. Data was recorded as per requirement. For measuring soil salinity soil was collected from heap at 15 day interval and soil salinity was measured by using EC Meter with 1:1 soil ex tract. Five plants were randomly selected from each plot to measure such traits as aux iliary branches per plant, the number of flowers and fruits per plant. No. of branches, no. of fruit per plant was recorded at harvesting time. No. of flower per plant was recorded daily. Fruit weight was measured after harvesting of fruits. Total yield was calculated by measuring total fruit weight of a plot. The data were statistically analyzed by software MStat-C and treatment means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum Soil salinity was reduced by using double layered mulch at top and bottom of pit. Plant growth and yield performance of sweet gourd of double layered mulch pit was higher than single layer and no mulch. This trend was found almost same in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of the experiment. For better yield of sweet gourd or pit crop farmers should use this technology in coastal region of the country.
