Trials were taken to find out feed efficiency of sea bass, L. calcarifer fed on live tilapia under controlled conditions and length-weight relationship, condition factor and % of organ weight of captive sea bass, cultured and wild ones were determined. Different sized farmed sea bass were further raised with live tilapia in two ton capacity aquaria. Farmed sea bass as well as wild ones were collected. Growth and feed efficiency of L. calcarifer. length-weight relationship, condition factor, percent of organ weight to body weight of aquaria raised, farmed and wild ones were compared. It was found that to gain a kilogram of body weight, sea bass under different size groups requires 9.1 to 13.0 kg of live tilapia under captive conditions. Though condition factor of farmed sea bass was slightly better than those of captive or wild ones, but no significant differences were found in length-weight relationship or % of organ weight to total body weight.

To find out daily live tilapia requirements for L. calcarifer, prey size of it depending on its size, growth and feed efficiency.

Twelve 2 ton capacity fibre glass aquaria were used. The aquaria were grouped into six with 2 replications. Aquaria were supplied with underground and settled hyposaline water of 5-7 ppt. No aeration was supplied and the top of the aquaria was covered with nets. Sea bass, L. calcarifer used as test animals, were collected from reserved tanks of marine station, FRI raised with tilapia from juvenile stage. A mixed group of sea bass of different sizes was harvested with cast net and grouped. Number 1 to No.6 groups had fishes of variable sizes; 100-200, 200-400, 400-600. 600-800, 800-1000 and 1000-1200g of L. calcarifer, respectively. Only two L. calcarifer were used in each aquaria. Baby and juvenile tilapia were harvested from FRI Marine Station outdoor cistern regularly to feed L. calcarifer in live condition. Tilapia population in the cistern was kept under growing with repeated feeding with rice and wheat bran and fertilization and water exchange to fulfil the demand for the experiment. Live tilapia were always maintained in the aquaria so that the vetki did not starve. At the same time relatively bigger tilapia were also stocked to each tank to determine maximum prey sizes for the vetki of different size groups. The amount of tilapia provided as live food to sea bass was recorded, whenever new batch of tilapia released to the tank. Sampling of sea bass was done fortnightly and feed conversion rates were determined on wet-weight basis, i.e. tilapia eaten on wet-weight, and the weight gained by L. calcarifer on wet- weight. Sea bass raised with tilapia in a large extensive farm near Teknuf by Marine Station, FRI were used as farmed sea bass to compare with captive ones for different parameters. Wild sea bass of comparable sizes were collected from fish market at Cox's Bazar town. The collected sea bass were kept in freezer to compare with farmed and captive ones. Length and weight relationship of captive, fanned and wild sea bass was determined. Sea bass raised by mixed culture at marine station. FRI were used as farmed fish, commercially available sea bass from market with comparable sizes were used to compare the same parameter with those of reared ones, mentioned above. Twenty sea bass from each group were selected at random and used for the purpose. At the end of length-weight measurement, 10 sea bass each from captive culture, fanned and wild ones were sampled at random and dissected. The fork length, the weight of entire body, liver, heart, intestine and spleen were measured individually. Condition factor was also calculated from the body weight and fork length.

From these findings, it may be suggested that live tilapia may solely fulfil the nutritional demand of sea bass, L. calcarifer for its sound growth and development, and roughly 11 kilogram of live tilapia are needed to raise a kilogram of sea bass under captive condition. Though condition factor of farmed sea bass was slightly better than those of captive or wild ones, but no significant differences were found in length-weight relationship or % of organ weight to total body weight. Same rate of live tilapia or species may be needed to farm sea bass.
